JOB PURPOSE:
The Painter/Blaster is responsible for safely completing all aspects or work in the painting, surface preparation, finishing, and maintenance of projects in accordance with Safway Group Companies safety guidelines, Quality Control program procedures, and Federal, state, and local laws. 

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform all aspects of a coatings project safely and efficiently: Painting, blasting, sanding, priming, sealing, and patching surfaces, buildings, and fixtures. While performing the aforementioned tasks, the painter must always be cognizant of quality control procedures, project specifications (good understanding of customer needs), and all applicable safety guidelines.
  • Operate, clean and maintain all painting equipment, including brush, roll, sprayers, mixing containers, mixing equipment, and pumps. Safely storing and labeling all materials when not in use.
  • Maintain a safe work site, free of safety hazards by monitoring compliance with safety program requirements.
  • Document and/or communicate safety concerns to appropriate parties.
  • Communicate and listen effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and possibly customers.

DESCRIPTION OF NONESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • May perform administrative duties such as yard and jobsite inventory, safety meetings, payroll timesheets, change orders, time and material tickets, bill of materials, the reading of blueprints, and other jobsite paper work as assigned both accurately and neatly. 
  • May also be required to operate company vehicles which may require an active/valid driver’s license (CDL if applicable)
  • DOT Medical Card, DOT driver file, and more specific drug & alcohol testing requirements. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead Painters/Journeymen may supervise small crews based on size of project and scope of work.  Carries out supervisory duties in accordance with company policies and applicable employment laws.  Responsibilities include training employees, assigning and directing work, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Has an understanding of the application of high performance coatings in a variety of industries
  • Requires experience with all aspects of painting, surface preparation, finishing, and maintenance of a wide variety of industrial structures
  • Requires good oral communication skills
  • Requires the ability to present a clean and professional image
  • Must be available at non-traditional hours to complete projects according to contract or job requirement
  • Requires the ability to do basic math
  • Knowledge of Safway Group Companies Safety and Health Procedural Manual
  • Painting/Coatings experience in the commercial or industrial markets is desirable
  • Education generally equivalent to a High School diploma is desirable
  • Current/valid driver’s license (CDL when applicable) is desirable for Painters (not applicable if not driving)
    • Drive a flat bed or semi-truck per all rules and regulations of any local, state or Federal (US DOT) regulatory authorities when transporting materials
    • Perform preventative maintenance & inspections and report problems with trucks along with keeping a log of preventative maintenance & inspections
    • Must be 21 to operate commercial vehicles (Single/Combination GVWR > 10,000 lbs.)
  • Basic understanding of coatings scope documents

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING REQUIRED:

  • May require the wearing of safety glasses, steel-toed shoes, safety harness, hearing protection, respiratory protection, hard hat, and protective gloves, and site specific personal protective equipment while working at the various job sites (i.e. respirators).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk and/or hear, and/or use hands and fingers to handle or touch objects, tools, or controls.  The employee is frequently required to stand, and/or walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move and/or pull up to 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance) of painting equipment, which may include lifting 50 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance) above shoulders (6-7 feet) to load onto trucks.  The employee must also be capable of continuously carrying/wearing harness and work belt weighing 25-50 pounds while performing work. Must also be capable of climbing onto trailers or trucks and onto racks to secure and move equipment as well as climbing ladders to access scaffolding up to high precarious places.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee regularly works in high, precarious places, is exposed to fumes, airborne particles, dust, non-weather heat, and toxic or caustic chemicals.  The employee is also regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and may work in varying degrees of confined space.  The noise level is usually moderate, but may be loud at certain times while working at construction job sites.  There may be work related travel.
