Job Description

 Job Title:                         Service Mechanic

 Reports Directly To:        Service Manager

 JOB DESCRIPTION:

A service mechanic must have experience installing sanitary waste & vent, water, clean utility gasses, pure water systems, and special waste systems. He/she must be able to work productively and receive minimal supervision. A Service Mechanic must be customer service oriented and mindful of additional opportunities for service sales.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Service Mechanic must have a valid MA journeyman or master plumbing license

Service Mechanic must have a valid MA Drivers license with a clean driving record for the previous five years (no moving violations)

Service Mechanic must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with customers, vendors and administrative personnel.

Service Mechanics must be able to analyze, troubleshoot and repair equipment and system problems

Service Mechanics must be able to read and understand blue prints and other construction documents. (RFI’s , specifications , change orders, etc.)

Service Mechanic must be able to productively layout and install piping systems, fixtures and equipment from blue prints and sketches.

Service Mechanics must also be able to climb and work from a ladder, and be comfortable working with heights.

Service Mechanics are also required to be able to bend and lift heavy materials repeatedly, and to be able to work with hand and power tools safely.

Service Mechanic possess basic computer skills and understand the process of email communication, faxing, scanning and word processing.

 RESPONSIBILITY OF POSITION:

Service Mechanics will be expected to show up in uniform, on time and fit for work everyday.

Service Mechanic will take direction from service manager/ Manager SSP and perform assigned tasks in a professional, safe and timely manner.

Service Mechanics are responsible for the safe operation of company owned service vehicle and to ensure vehicle is cleaned regularly.

Service Mechanics are responsible for the ongoing maintenance of assigned vehicle.

Service Mechanics are responsible for the completion of service calls/projects and ensuring customer satisfaction with completed work.  

Mechanics will be expected to identify hazards and be able to plan work safely.

Service Mechanics are expected to transmit material usage and call slip data daily by electronic means. (Fax, email etc)

Mechanics must attend NSMC safety trainings when scheduled.

LICENSES/SPECIAL TRAINING:
A Massachusetts Master or Journeyman plumbing license is required.

A valid Massachusetts Drivers License with clean driving record and no moving violations for the past 5 years

Service mechanic must be able to pass a pre-placement physical and drug test.

Service Mechanic must possess a current Brazing Certification (NFPA 99)

Service Mechanic must acquire within six months of hire one or more of the following:

MA Backflow Repair Certification

MA Wastewater Level one operators license

 

RESPONSIBILITY TO OTHERS:

A service mechanic will be expected to perform while maintaining a professional attitude and appearance. As with all NSMC employees service mechanics will also be responsible for securing NSMC assets in the field, (tools, stock, etc.)

The safety of themselves as well as those working with or around them will also be the responsibility of a service mechanic. He/she will be expected to work safely and report any unsafe conditions or actions to their immediate supervisor.

Service Mechanics will also be expected to serve as a role model for apprentices by showing them the correct way to perform assigned tasks. A service mechanic will be expected to teach apprentices the trade while maintaining productivity in the field.

 

 METRICS:

A service mechanic will be evaluated on several metrics based upon productivity, profitability, billable hours, add on sales and customer service feedback. In addition, a monthly evaluation to be completed by the Service Manager will focus on how well they followed instructions and performed assigned tasks. Performance will be judged on quality of work and productivity. Quality will be based on the neatness and integrity of the systems installed as well as customer satisfaction/complaints or callbacks.  Productivity and profitability will be based on the estimated hours in the budget vs. the actual time taken to complete assigned tasks, billable hours vs actual timecard hours (T&M work)and effective use and replenishment of truck stock . Attitude and safety will also be considered in the evaluation.

  

In addition to the monthly evaluation all service mechanics will receive a yearly performance review by the Manager of Service and Small Projects. The review will identify strengths and weaknesses and offer guidance in areas needing improvement. Goals will be set and specific trainings will be identified to assist with career development.
