Summary:

Construction Workers fulfill an extremely vital role in the construction industry and to the success of Story Construction Co. because the work is put in place by Construction Workers under the direction of their Foreman and Superintendent. Working through a Construction Worker position provides a very beneficial developmental step in all career paths in the construction industry.

The position of Construction Worker requires working with others in a group or team, and includes responsibility for work outcomes and results and responsibility for the health and safety of others. Safety on the job is vital at Story Construction Co., so the Construction Worker is required to wear common protective or safety equipment.

Essential Functions:

The construction worker may complete independently or assist other workers in the following tasks:

Concrete:

Slab-On-Grade Systems
Subgrade preparation, set edge forms, install vapor barrier and wire reinforcement, concrete placement, concrete finishing, curing and protection

Concrete Walls
Build wall forms (steel and wood forms), set wall forms, build block-outs and set inserts, place concrete into forms, strip and clean forms

Concrete Floor System
Set shoring for structural slab, install decking system, build edge forms, concrete placement, concrete finishing, curing and protection, strip and clean forms and shoring

Structural Steel and Metal Building Erection
Rig and unload heavy beams and columns from trucks, set columns on anchor bolts, set and bolt beams between columns, set bar joists on beams and weld in place, weld metal decking to bar joists, rig, unload and set precast panels in place and weld to structure, install insulation and pre-finished panels on metal buildings

Reinforcing Steel Installation
Install reinforcing steel in walls, slabs, beams and columns, layout and pre-tie reinforcing to be lifted into place with a crane, rig and unload trucks, rig and swing pre-tied steel into place

Interior Process Pipe Installation
Install and test various types and sizes of pipes, fittings, valves, and pipe supports inside buildings and structures

Carpentry (Rough and Finish)
Frame walls and roof trusses, install door frames, doors, cabinets, lab furniture and counter tops, drywall, paneling, and hardware

Underground Pipe Installation
Install, test, and backfill various types and sizes of underground utility and process pipe

Operation/Maintenance of Construction Small Machinery, Equipment, and Tools
Demonstrate basic hand signals, operate boom lifts, forklifts, and skid loaders, demonstrate ability to use compressors, pumps, chop saw, generator, vibrators, compactors, and scissor lifts

Competencies: Integrity, initiative, professionalism, interpersonal skills, willingness to learn, and dependability. Accurate reading, writing and math, active learning, critical and analytical thinking, and communicating through listening and speaking. Teamwork, customer focus, adaptable, flexible, problem-solving, and decision-making. Construction expertise, construction safety, and the operation and maintenance of construction small machinery, equipment, and tools.

Work Environment: While performing the job duties, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration within OSHA standards. Job tasks are performed in close physical proximity to other people. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, extreme cold, and exposure to dust.

Physical Demands: The Construction Worker will work in conditions of repetitive movement, bending or twisting, and using hands to lift, push, carry, handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The Construction Worker lifts heavy objects, walks and stands for long periods of time, and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.

Travel: Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected. Construction Workers are assigned to jobsites located across the state.
