Job Summary:
Manage Shop repairing medium duty trucks, rider and walk behind saws and air compressors. Our current fleet consists of 30 medium duty trucks and concrete saws. Order parts as needed. Provide business support to facilitate the planning and coordinate activities of designated projects to ensure that goals or objectives of project are accomplished within prescribed time frame and budget. Schedule, coordinate and supervise a small staff of mechanics. Assist supervisors and foreman; work as a team to have the most successful outcome on a highway, roadway or airport project.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Heavy equipment repair background (primarily medium trucks) and saws
- Welding, Small Engine Repair, Hydraulics and Electronics Knowledge
- OSHA and Safety Training Knowledge
- Excellent Housekeeping, Time Management and Organizational Skills
- Flexible; working late hours, weekends and on call as needed
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize
- Leadership Skills, including ability to delegate, develop and mentor shop employees
- Excellent customer service skills, phone and computer skills
Minimum Qualifications, Certifications, Licensures
- Maintain valid driver's lcense
- Must be able to travel out of state as needed (10%-15% of the time)
- Must pass the pre-employment physical, drug/alcohol test and random testing
- Must possess or obtain within 120 days of employment a CDL Class A driver's license with tractor trailer and air brake endorsement
- Conduct Driver Safety Orientations and Road Tests for New Employees in Wisconsin
Essential Functions for Shop Manager include the following:
Mechanical Expertise:
- Utilize problem solving skills, setting up and repairing equipment for foreman and supervisors in a timely fashion.
- Set up services in the field when equipment breaks down utilizing excellent customer service skills
Supervisory Skills:
- Plan, direct and supervise work of laborers assigned to shop and shop mechanics
- Manage hours of yourself and employees to minimize overtime
- Understanding D.O.T. rules and regulations to ensure compliance when driving
- Ensure shop is in OSHA compliance, clean, neat and organized by utilizing appropriate safety and housekeeping practices
- Conduct road tests for new employees. This requires obtaining your CDL license with appropriate endorsements
- Orientate new employees to safety standards set by D.O.T., OSHA, and ISC
- Weekly safety tool box talk meetings with laborers and shop mechanics
- Ensure parking lot, yard, etc., is clean; Plowed during winter months
Administrative & Organizational Skills:
- Embrace the inventory management and equipment maintenance through using our equipment tracking software
- Ensure we get the best pricing on our parts and equiment
- Order parts as needed to maintain stock
- Pick up parts and make vendor calls as needed
- Basic knowledge of email and Microsoft Word
Physical Requirements:
- Repeatedly stand and sit, climb and/or balance, stoop, crouch, crawl, talk or hear; Use hands to finger, or feel; Reach with hands and arms; Bend body downward, upward and forward; bending at the knees and lifting and/ or moving up to 100 Ibs.
- Ability to work long hours and may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, fumes, airborne particles, or noxious chemicals, and is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts. Working conditions is usually moderate to loud.
- May be at risk of electrical shock and exposed to vibration.
- Must be able to rotate from tasks including but not limited to driving with a trailer, lifting boxes, working with sealing equipment, small machinery, flagging, concrete repair including occasional jackhammer usage.
- Must be able to understand and follow directions and work as a team for the good of the project.
- Must be able to maintain and fill out fleet reports for vehicles and report any maintenance issues/cleaning of vehicle or equipment.
- Able to properly use tools and equipment.
- Ability to wear active personal protective equipment.
- Ability to complete physical qualifications to maintain a valid driver's license.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
