We are currently seeking a Site Safety and Health Officer for a pier construction project on Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands. (Tropical Island in the South Pacific.) Experience with EM 385-1-1 and experience on Marine Construction projects preferred

  • 5+ years of construction experience working on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects in a safety role 
  • General Construction experience as SSHO
  • Familiar with EM385-1-1 and comfortable writing AHAs and APPs
  • At least 8 hours of documented safety training each year for the last 5 years 
  • Waterfront construction experience as SSHO (Barge work, pile driving, piers, docks ext)

Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for overall management of the safety and occupational health program on assigned projects. The Site Safety and Health Officer shall have the authority to act in all safety matters for assigned projects at all times, to perform safety and occupational health management, surveillance, inspections, and safety enforcement. Perform all work in a safe and professional manner.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  1. Prepare the project Safety Plan and Activity Hazard Analysis for each definable feature of work on the project
  2. Ensure compliance with project Accident Prevention Plan
  3. Ensure personal protective equipment meets applicable OSHA/EPA requirements and employees are trained on proper use
  4. Conducts daily walkthrough of the project site(s) ensuring work is being accomplished safely and occupational health is not compromised
  5. Construction Hazard Recognition
  6. Safety training of all personnel assigned to project(s) and project site visitors
  7. Conducts project safety inspections with follow-up inspections of any open items
  8. Subcontractor qualification and training
  9. Creation and evaluating activity hazard reviews
  10. Regulatory compliance with OSHA and USACE standards
  11. Accident and Incident investigations
  12. Development and Implementation of Corrective Action Plans
  13. Works with project supervision to create safety solutions to safety problems
  14. Fosters and maintains a positive safety culture for the project personnel
  15. Maintains all safety certifications as required by contract
  16. Attends and participate in all preparatory and initial quality control phase meetings
  17. Conduct weekly safety meetings for all workers
  18. Produce a Daily Safety Report of activities performed
  19. Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to get along with customers, co-workers, supervisors, and management.
  20. Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS, & EXPERIENCE:

Educational and experience requirements/preferences include: 

  • 5+ years of construction experience working on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects in a safety role 
  • General Construction experience as SSHO
  • Familiar with EM385-1-1 and comfortable writing AHAs and APPs
  • At least 8 hours of documented safety training each year for the last 5 years 
  • Waterfront construction experience as SSHO (Barge work, pile driving, piers, docks ext)
  • Current OSHA 30-hour certificate or equivalent within the last 5 years;  and competent person status as required.
