SUMMARY:   

The Front End Developer will be working on Questar’s next generation student test taking platform.  You will be working with team of developers on implementing new features and maintaining existing code in one of the most important products at Questar Assessment, Inc. 

Questar’s next generation student test taking platform is an elegant web-based application that is geared toward delivering secure, scalable, interoperable assessments. This includes creating new interactive question-and-answering systems that utilize leading-edge technology to enhance assessment in schools throughout nation. Making sure the code is clean for a wide swath of students is a must and we are seeking someone passionate about keeping all the users in mind. 

As such you will be helping with concerns ranging from iOS tablets, Chromebooks, to Android and standard desktop OS.  Your code will need to drive Questar’s student test taking platform to a well perceived product that brings confidence and delight to students and teachers across districts in United Status.

The frontend developer position reports to the Director of Web Development

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Content management and publishing

  • Collaboration with various internal and external teams to ensure content works within our systems across multiple platform, browser and device combinations
  • Import, export and transformation of content in various formats, including standard and proprietary extensions to QTI and APIP XML formats
  • Apply layout, format, and accessibility features to content
  • Ensure item and assessment publishing and delivery are accessible using QTI/APIP standards.
  • Collaborate with Questar publications team to ensure apply layout specifications

Enhancements to Questar propriety technology products

  • Research new technologies and build prototypes to feed product and client development.
  • Develop updates to existing features in student test-taking platform to enhance user experience on a wide array of desktop and mobile devices (such as iOS, Android, etc)
  • Enhance current system to ensure backend scalability and front-end design integrity
  • Collaborate with BA, QA and product owners to develop new enhancements and releases – from estimation to development and through deployment
  • Work with the QA team on validation of features, and resolving any defects that arise out of quality assurance process

Troubleshoot and resolve production issues that impact customer experience

  • Work with customer service for quick debugging and data extraction for bug fixing.
  • Respond to production support issues that are raised from customer service team with the appropriate sense of urgency
  • Work with QA team to reproduce the issue, which may include multiple device/platforms/browsers
  • Quickly evaluate the situation, identify the possible cause(s), develop and test possible solutions, promote fix to QA environment and prepare the code for deployment
  • Identify other areas that the production support issue raised may be effecting other customers who are not (yet) raising the issue and proactively plan a remedy prior to customer impacts
  • Develop solutions that proactively mitigate future production issues on future customer projects through documentation and test cases that identify and solve for known issues

Other duties

  • Develop code to streamline and support online content authoring and publishing capability that is needed to feed new and innovative items to students across nation.
  • Research new technologies and build prototypes to feed product and client development.

Skills Required:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively to all members of the organization in person and during remote conferences.
  • Ability to be self-directed and motivated.
  • Team oriented, open, honest and collaborative – non-political approach.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Passion for clean code that works for students across a wide array of platforms.
  • BA/BS degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.  
  • 3 years of relevant work experience in software development.
  • Strong proficiency and experience with Javascript, JQuery, AJAX, HTML5 and CSS3.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1 year of object oriented programming
  • Experience with Javascript libraries (Boostrap, Angular, Ember, etc.)
  • Interest in user interface design for education field
  • Web application development experience
  • Experience working on cross-browser platforms and devices
  • Development experience designing object-oriented JavaScript
  • Experience with user interface frameworks such as XUL, Flex and XAML.
  • Familiarity with RESTful Architecture and REST best practices
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.0 compliance) and education accessibility standards (QTI/APIP, SIF, AIF)
  • SQL knowledge for data storage/manipulation
  • Familiarity with other web technologies and program languages a plus : .NET, MVC, Java, C#
