Position Overview:

The primary responsibility of this position is to coordinate the engineering and integration of Sheppard products into customer vehicle applications.  Incumbent must be able to work under minimal supervision.  The following responsibilities are considered essential job functions:

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Review project input requirements supplied by RHS sales personnel or directly from the customer
  • Follows an engineering design process to identify and justify an application solution
  • Proposes steering system solutions that satisfy both Sheppard and customer requirements
  • Perform application reviews at OEM facilities or other locations to ensure that the correct product has been specified and that it has been properly integrated with the vehicle
  • Identifies and coordinates validation testing and requirements
  • Provide application related technical support to internal and external customers as required
  • Generate and/or maintains documentation related to each application (e.g. application review reports, part cross references, DFMEA, DVP&R, etc.)
  • Develop and enhances tools to support and improve the application engineering function (e.g. vehicle geometry study, bearing load analysis, stress analysis etc.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions/ Physical Requirements:

  • Exposure to: General shop and machine tool noise; dirt; grease; hydraulic fluid and coolants from the operation of machines and equipment
  • Normal working position is sitting, bending stretching, lifting, standing, or walking throughout the plant. The weight can range anywhere from 1 to 75 lbs. infrequently in which proper lifting/moving techniques are required.
  • Travel: Domestic and foreign travel may be required to meet with customers or to perform application reviews (Approx. 5-10%)
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)- if applicable: Requires continuous medical certification; occasional operation of various medium and heavy duty vehicles (w/ trailer)

Skills/Qualifications:

  • B.S. Mechanical Engineering or 8 years of equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of truck steering and suspension systems
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and Lean methods to improve them
  • Knowledge of foundry operations
  • Knowledge of materials (especially cast irons and steel)
  • Knowledge of seal technology and materials
  • Knowledge of general engineering concepts and principles
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams
  • Ability to communicate with internal and external customers (all levels)
  • Ability to identify and execute strategies to support objectives established by the Director of Product Engineering
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems
  • Ability to collect, organize, summarize and document engineering information
  • Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written)
  • Skilled in the use of the MS Office Suite
  • Skilled in the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to create parts, assemblies and drawings (i.e. Creo)
  • Skilled in stress and mechanism analysis using CAD software (i.e. Creo)
  • Ability to travel up to 10%
  • Commercial Driver’s license
