Job Description
This position performs in a leadership role as part of the District 6 Bridge Crew which includes Highway Tech Seniors. Interaction with the Office of Bridges and Structures, District 6 Office staff, District 6 Highway Maintenance Supervisors will be expected. This position will be responsible for providing technical assessments of structural conditions, the coordination of staff, materials and equipment to initiate repairs/maintenance, provide guidance and oversight to ensure all work meets applicable standards and is completed in a timely fashion.
This position will be expected to utilize specialized computer software applications for the planning, programming and tracking of data for bridges and structures and will also be required to attend and successfully complete a comprehensive bridge inspection course within a time period specified at the time of appointment.
This position must demonstrate the ability to operate, maintain and troubleshoot specialized maintenance equipment utilized in the repair and maintenance of roadways, bridges and other highway elements. This person is expected to operate snow and ice removal equipment and is subject to being on call during other emergency situations, must pass a physical examination and be able to work outdoors in inclement weather.
Lifting: Ability to perform heavy work, occasionally (1-33% of the time) lifting/lowering, carrying and pushing/pulling various items/using force from 50 - 100 lbs. Team lift or mechanical assist recommended for weights over 75 lbs.
CDL: Must possess a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within 14 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and maintained in order to continue employment.
Requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
Additional Requirements:
- Post offer, pre-employment physical.
- Within 5 months of appointment, must reside within 30 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from assigned work location.
- Must respond to emergency situations as required.
- Must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours. Some overnight travel may be required.
- Shift: 7:00 - 3:30, M-F, Hours may vary, occasional overtime required.
- Subject to call 24 hours/day during emergency conditions, including nights/weekends/holidays.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Construction Engineering, the successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam as administered by the Iowa Board of Engineering and Land Surveying Examiners, and two (2) years of *bridge inspection experience;
OR
graduation from an accredited area college or university with an Associate's Degree in Civil or Construction Engineering or Engineering Technology and four (4) years of *bridge inspection experience;
OR
licensure as an active Professional Engineer by the Iowa Board of Engineering and Land Surveying Examiners;
OR

Additional Qualification Requirements
- Must successfully complete a Federal Highway Administration approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards prior to appointment or within a period of time designated by the appointing authority.
- Designated positions must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Instruction Permit upon hire. Within 14 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License must be obtained and maintained with air brake and tanker endorsements in order to continue employment. Other endorsements may also be required.
- If a CDL is not designated, all positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
- In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
- Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
- Bridge Inspection Experience means: "Active participation in bridge inspections in accordance with the NBIS (National Bridge Inspection Standards), in either a field inspection, supervisory, or management role. A combination of bridge design, bridge maintenance, bridge construction and bridge inspection experience, with the predominant amount (more than 50%) in bridge inspection, is acceptable."
- Employees in designated positions must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments.
- Within a timeframe as determined by the appointing authority, employees in designated positions are required to reside within 30 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from assigned work location.
- Employees must respond to emergency situations as required.
