CURRENT OPPORTUNITY:  Fire Protection Journeyman/Foreman

Position Summary:

Fire Protection Journeymen / Foremen work from blueprints to determine types and placement of piping, valves and heads to be installed for fire sprinkler systems primarily on commercial construction projects.  The Fire Protection Journeyman/Foreman is to carry out the work assigned by the job Foreman or Superintendent.  This person is responsible for high quality work and productivity.  They will also be required to educate apprentices and establish good quality in their craftsmanship.

• Good time management and organizational skills

Essential Job Functions:

• Performs all work in a safe manner.  Watches out for fellow team members to ensure they are working in a safe manner as well.  Wears Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required at all times.
• Abides by all safety and conduct policies laid out by Midwestern Mechanical and the different work sites.
• Diagnoses problems and/or failures in existing or new fire protection systems.
• Repairs and installs various types of piping including iron, steel, copper and pvc.
• Inspects equipment, structures or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
• Operates powered equipment including hand tools, stationary machines and others as required in a safe manner at all times.
• Makes decisions by analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
• Maintains a high quality initiative while completing assigned duties.
• Responds to emergency on-call situations for the purpose of resolving immediate work related issues.
• Orders specialty tools and/or equipment from the Midwestern Mechanical tool room as needed, and assumes responsibility for their care.
• Tests for leaks in new and repaired systems with compressed air and/or water.
• Ability to lawfully drive a motor vehicle and maintain a current driver’s license in order to commute to the various current or prospective job sites in the region.
• Overnight travel as necessary within the region for corporate meetings, on-site project follow-up and conferences.
• Provides daily direction to assigned Apprentices on the job site and actively participates in training and development of Apprentices.
• Follows and executes directions and assigned duties from Foreman and Superintendent.
• Maintains a positive attitude to drive and build positive morale.
• Required to meet all standards of Midwestern Mechanical while working independently with minimal supervision.
• Attend meetings when required by Forman, Superintendent and Midwestern Mechanical.

Minimum Job Requirements:

• Available for overtime upon occasion.
• Ability to work independently and with others.
• Strong mechanical skills and willingness to learn new things.
• Ability to verbally communicate with management, city officials, on-site customers and other employees.
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid driver’s license.  Ability to obtain and maintain DOT Medical Card.
• Reliable transportation to get to and from the shop.
• Ability to work well under pressure, meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines.
• Ability to read and interpret written materials, perform basic mathematical computations and use measuring tools.      
• Ability to identify basic trade materials by size, shape and function.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

• Completion of High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Nicet Inspections and Testing program preferred; may complete while employed.
• OSHA ten or thirty hour training preferred.

Working Conditions:

Fire Protection Journeymen work in residential, commercial, industrial and public settings in both indoor and outdoor job sites which includes exposure to all elements of weather including cold, heat, wind, rain and snow.  The weather may also impact the site exposing the individual to water and mud.

This position also includes exposure to areas off of the ground requiring the team member to work in a safe manner.  The team member will also be exposed to loud noises where hearing protection is necessary and provided. 

Physical Requirements:  The job’s functions require the following physical demands:

• Fine finger dexterity and hand & arm strength with the ability to grip and hold objects with both hands.
• Ability to lift and operate power tools to include in an overhead position.
• Ability to be off of the ground in a scissor lift or other piece of equipment.
• Ability to independently lift and carry objects safely that weigh up to 20 pounds routinely, 50 pounds frequently and 80 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to climb and maintain balance on ladders and scaffold; kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, twist, finger, grasp and feel on a constant and repetitive basis; stand, walk, talk, see (20/20 vision naturally or corrected), hear within normal range and perform repetitive motion activities.
• Ability to work in extreme environmental conditions including excessive heat and cold, noise, vibrations, dust, fumes, oils, and adhere to all company safety requirements.
• Ability to physically negotiate the hazards of a new construction worksite (e.g. uneven surfaces, floor openings, heights, construction debris and poor lighting) and adhere to all company safety requirements.
• Must be able to work assigned schedule as required by job demands.
