We are currently seeking experienced carpenters with concrete formwork experience for a project on Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands. (Tropical island in the South Pacific.) You will be working overseas for San Juan Construction in partnership with the U.S. government.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Project Foreman/Superintendent

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard, using carpenter’s hand tools and power tools, and conforming to local building codes. All work to be performed in a safe and professional manner.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber of fiberboard, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
• Selects specified type of lumber or other materials.
• Prepares layout, using rule, framing square, and calipers.
• Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials, using pencil, chalk, and marking gage.
• Shapes materials to prescribed measurements, using saws, chisels, and planes. Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue.
• Verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter’s level.
• Erects framework for structures and lays subflooring.
• Builds stairs and lays out an installs partitions and cabinet work.
• Covers subfloor with building paper to keep out moisture and lays hardwood, parquet, and wood-strip block floors by nailing floors to subfloor or cementing them to mastic or asphalt base.
• Applies shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
• Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors; doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, letterdrops, and kick plates.
• Constructs forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
• Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.
• Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to get along with customers, co-workers, and supervisors.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS         

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS, & EXPERIENCE:

Educational and experience preferences: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent. 2-4 years’ experience in duties described above and/or equivalent combination of experience and technical training or apprenticeship program. 

Minimum 1 years’ experience with formwork/concrete construction labor work experience.

Workers should be able to:  Work within precise limits or standard of accuracy; Apply shop mathematics to solve problems; Plan work and select proper tools; Compare and see differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects; Picture solid objects from drawings or diagrams; Perform a variety of duties which may change often; and rate information using standards that can be measured or checked.  Physically, workers must be able to: Climb and maintain balance on scaffolds and ladders; Reach for, handle, and manipulate objects and materials; Lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds; Stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl, and see well (either naturally or with correction).

COMMENTS:
