Overseas position located on Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands.

  IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Project Foreman/Superintendent

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Lays building materials, such as brick, structural tile, and concrete/cinder, glass, gypsum, and terra cotta block to construct or repair walls, partitions, arches, sewers, and other structures. All work performed in a safe and professional manner.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  1. Measures distance from reference points and marks guidelines on working surface to lay out work.
  2. Spreads soft bed (layer) of mortar that serves as base and binder for block, using trowel.
  3. Applies mortar to end of block and positions block in mortar bed.
  4. Taps block with trowel to level, align, and embed in mortar, allowing specified thickness of joint.
  5. Removes excess mortar from face of block, using trowel.
  6. Finishes mortar between brick/block with pointing tool or trowel.
  7. Breaks bricks/blocks to fit spaces too small for whole brick/block, using edge of trowel or brick hammer.
  8. Determines vertical and horizontal alignment of courses, using plumb bob, gage line, and level.
  9. Fastens brick or terra cotta veneer to face of structures, with tie wires embedded in mortar between bricks, or in anchor holes in veneer brick.
  10. May weld metal parts to steel structural members.
  11. May apply plaster to walls and ceiling, using trowel, to complete repair work.
  12. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS, & EXPERIENCE

Educational and experience requirements: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent preferred. Completion of 4 year apprenticeship program or qualified technical training required. 2-4 years experience as a journeyman preferred.

Worker should be able to: Rate information using standards that can be measured; perform quick, accurate, and careful work; make quick and accurate calculations; judge straight lines, spaces, and proportions; look at flat drawings or pictures and understand how they would look as solid objects with height, width, and depth; and work easily and skillfully with hands. Physically, workers must be able to; Climb and maintain body balance on ladders and scaffolding; use hands and arms fully; stand, kneel, bend, crawl, or crouch for long periods; and see well (either naturally or with correction); and lift and carry objects weighing 50 pounds or up to 100 pounds at a time.
