AIM Aerospace (“AIM” or the “Company”) is a leading supplier of composite ducting, structural and interior parts to the global aerospace industry that is currently comprised of two divisions, AIM Aerospace and Quatro Composites (or “Quatro”), operating from five locations in the United States. MISSION

The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading engineers and designers involved in the development of polymer based composites aerospace applications, such as engines, nacelles, and structures. S/he will direct, coordinate, and exercise functional authority for program planning. S/he will also be in charge of the organization, control, integration, completion, and transition of manufacturing engineering products within the areas of assigned responsibility. The Director of Engineering will also provide personal and professional development support to staff, and find ways to attract and unleash talent across engineering disciplines to sustain and advance the engineering community at Poway. To be successful, this individual must be able to execute multiple projects simultaneously and excel in a fast paced, results-oriented work environment.

This position is located in Poway, California.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Partner closely with AIM business leadership to drive engineering priorities and processes for innovative, high-quality, timely and cost effective outputs
  • Direct management of personnel assigned to the company’s Research Center
  • Establish a budget and manage spending to ensure that activities are accomplished within dynamic financial targets
  • Interface between business development, program management, manufacturing and personnel management to establish company specific goals surrounding new product introduction and technical support
  • Make specific personnel assignments to support the completion of programs e.g. technical studies, preparation of specifications and technical plans, product design, and testing
  • Ensure product conformance to sound engineering principles and practice, as well as applicable industry, government, and customer requirements and related specifications
  • Keep aware of the latest technology developments to ensure the company sees available opportunities for technical improvements in products and/or cost reductions.
  • Support IP generation that will protect innovations for years to come
  • Drive accountability through portfolio management
  • Evaluate tools and techniques for applicability to engineering department function. Make recommendations and justify expenditures for tools, equipment and training to improve department operation and efficiency, e.g. computer hardware/software, test equipment, and personnel training
  • Establish and manage a network between development partners and vendors to ensure most efficient ways to complete engineering projects
  • Set goals and objectives for the team, communicate expectations to employees, and regularly review performance to identify areas of improvement. Implement necessary development and training programs or other take other appropriate actions as needed
  • Promote and maintain a positive and supportive work environment
  • Promote and support solutions throughout the development and post launch phase

PROFILE / EXPERIENCE / SKILLS

The Director of Engineering must be a commercially astute leader. Ideal candidates will have extensive engineering and management experience in the area of research and development. Direct experience within the composites/thermoplastics industry is preferable. Candidates should be intellectually curious and stay informed on the latest technological breakthroughs in the industry.

  • 10+ years’ experience leading successful R&D teams
  • Practical Six Sigma experience is highly desirable (BB, MBB – DMAIC, DFSS, DMODV)
  • Industrial product experience
  • Strong track record of successfully leading the development and launch of significant products and portfolios of products through stage gate processes
  • Demonstrated commercial excellence and experience of successfully operating in complex matrix organizations
  • Deliver results through collaboration with peers across the broader organization
  • Functional experience in manufacturing and /or product marketing is highly desirable
  • Excellent program management skills
  • Proven track record of leveraging technology to provide leading edge products
  • Skilled in negotiating resource allocation and management from external sources
  • Ability to apply discipline while operating in dynamic environment and promoting agility in the delivery of new products
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at different levels of the organization
  • Strong ability to interact with customers

EDUCATION

M.S. degree in material science, mechanical engineering, or other related technical field is required

Ph.D. is desirable

MBA is a plus
