Job Description

JOB TITLE: Utility Laborer / Paving Crew  

DIVISION: Heavy Highway                                                     

SUPERVISOR:  Project Manager/Foreperson            

SUMMARY

Works on construction projects, usually working in utility capacity, by transferring from one task to another where demands require worker with varied experience and ability to work without close supervision by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The criteria for evaluation in this position include but are not limited to the following: 

 ‑           Performs general laboring duties, such as shoveling and raking stone, gravel, earth, and topsoil material.

 ‑           Signals operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery.

‑           Directs and guides traffic through the construction job site using proper equipment and procedures.   

‑           Erects, positions and moves sign packages in a safe, accurate manner, adhering to state specifications.  

‑           Performs miscellaneous responsibilities as requested by Project Manager or Foreperson to ensure smooth operation and to learn all areas of construction operations. 

‑           Operates various pieces of equipment, including power broom, jack hammer, pumps, pipe saw, chain saw, vibratory roller, and hand compactor. 

-           Performs daily preventative maintenance of equipment, including inspecting  lights, brakes, gas, oil and water on the above mentioned equipment.

‑           May drive a commercial pickup truck to transport materials to and from specified destinations in a safe and efficient manner. 

-           Ability to follow directions. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

 -           Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, inspectors, engineers, and the general public at all times.

-           Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.

-           Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.

-           Report to the assigned job site in proper attire and ready to begin work at the designated start time.

 -           Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Policies, Programs & Procedures Manual and OSHA/MSHA.

 -           Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required. 

 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Individuals wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as required by OSHA and/or MSHA and company policy.  Protective equipment for this job includes, but may not be limited to: Safety toe boots, high visibility safety apparel, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations, using some combination of skills and abilities.

           EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

           Less than high school education; or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

            LANGUAGE SKILLS:

            Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with customers or employees of organization.

            MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

             Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
