Summary of Position:           The Equipment / Yard Superintendent is responsible for supporting construction activities by performing the following Key Activities

Key Activities and Position Responsibilities: 

  • Manage shops & yard personnel
  • Monitor shop/yard/mechanic time cards to make sure equipment codes are correct. And help make sure jobs are charged when appropriate.
  • Maintain a safe and efficient shop insuring proper safety and PPE protocols are followed
  • Hire, supervise, train, evaluate, discipline, and terminate shop staff.
  • Assign work to subordinate personnel, manage assigned work and determine overall priority of work to be done.
  • Establish and maintain an ongoing schedule for outsourced, Welding, Mechanic and Paint Shops.
  • Assist in the procurement of parts, materials and supplies as needed.
  • Champion Shop & Yard Safety by:
    • Maintaining MSDS files
    • Specialized tool training
    • Facility inspections of but not limited to:
      • Fire extinguishers
      • Power tool inspections
      • Rigging certifications & inspections
      • Ladder & scaffolding inspections
      • Facility, shop & yard monthly “walk around” inspections
    • Identify employee training opportunities and offer performance evaluations as needed or scheduled.
  • Schedule, supervise and participate in the work involved in servicing, fabricating and maintaining ASI’s heavy mobile, light vehicle & plant equipment fleet
    • Establish and maintain a variety of plant, equipment & vehicle service records using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or other tracking methodologies.
    • Maintain a comprehensive preventive maintenance inspection (PMI) programs.
    • Be familiar with applicable OSHA, MSHA, FMCSA and other regulations.
    • Estimate inside/outside repair costs.
    • Administer contracts, warranties and guarantees on automotive and construction equipment and tools.
    • Coordinate equipment maintenance activities with other department’s division’s projects and with outside agencies.
  • Document development;
  • Act as the “Competent Person” in the areas of equipment safety, proper operation and maintenance. 
  • Assist in the development of equipment fleet administration standards, training and certifying of vehicle, equipment and plant operating policies
  • Creation of driver's manuals or newsletters to keep employees informed about their fleet programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

As an ASI Equipment/Yard Superintendent you are expected to “lead by example” by having a good positive attitude, being punctual, wearing proper PPE, enforcing all ASI safety, maintenance and equipment policies. 

Required Qualifications and Training: 

  • Two-year degree from an accredited college in management, business, public administration and/or another related field, or 6 years equivalent equipment management experience.
  • The candidate must have 6 - 10 years of experience working with the operation, maintenance, or administration of fleets of vehicles as well as supervisory experience.
  • Essential computer skills include: CMMS programs, telematics, Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • knowledge regarding the principles, methods and practices pertaining to the operation of an equipment maintenance and repair facility along with the tools, lubricants, equipment and procedures used in servicing, overhauling, repairing, preventive maintenance, and adjusting a variety of automotive and other power-driven equipment.
  • Ability to travel throughout the US, Canada and abroad 10% - 20% as required.
  • Possession of a valid Driver License.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, scheduling and excellent oral and written communication skills are required.
  • NCCCO, ASE Master Truck Technician and welder certifications would be considered an asset.

 Essential Physical Ability Requirements for ASI Personnel: 

Working in the field at ASI Construction LLC. is often physically demanding.  The following list describes the minimum ability requirements for field personnel. 

  • Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials;
  • Move heavy objects (94 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less);
  • Move light objects (less than 94 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet);
  • Heavy lifting with repeated stooping, carrying and bending continually over time (i.e., picks up materials and move to a different location);
  • Work extended shifts with non-standard break times;
  • Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements;
  • Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting;
  • Must have vision equal to or better than is required for driving;
    • If corrective lenses are required to achieve this level of vision, the employee must be able to wear PPE without interfering with the corrective lenses or the required PPE.
    • The employee may have to purchase eye glasses (safety glass, etc.) that are compliant with ASI’s Safety Program and OSHA/MSHA requirements;
  • Must have good hand-eye coordination;
  • Must have quick reaction times;
  • Must be able to hear adequately enough to be alerted by horns, sirens, shouting, or any other noise that is meant to convey a safety warning;
    • If corrective device is required to achieve this level of hearing, the employee must be able to wear PPE without interfering with the corrective device or the required PPE;
  • Lift arms above shoulder level (i.e., throws bags into a truck);
  • Must have good balance and must not be clumsy;
  • Climb ladders or steps to reach objects;
  • Must be able to work at heights of up to 100’ or more;
  • Must be able to work in confined or enclosed spaces;
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time;
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time;
  • Must be able to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and safety-toed boots;
  • Must be able to walk moderate distances to reach work area (1/2 mile or more);
