The Underground Crew Lead will directly supervise and coordinate activities of a utility crew on worksites. This person may also engage in the day to day trade work of the employees being supervised.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Plan out each day and communicate to the crew members what activities are to be accomplished.
- Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Bring problems to the attention of the Utilities Operations Manager (UOM) and Safety Manager as needed.
- Coordinate, direct and lead workers engaged in the construction activities.
- Supervise crews to obtain top quality workmanship, efficiency, employee satisfaction, morale, communication, commitment, teamwork and pride.
- Accurately track bid quantities. Recognize project items that are not part of bid items and make project inspector and UOM aware of these items.
- Review and verify employee time sheets for accuracy before signing and submitting to the timekeepers/Payroll.
- Analyze and resolve worker issues. If the problems are around harassment, work with Human Resources to develop a plan of action.
- Communicate with UOM or maintenance staff about maintenance needs on all major pieces of equipment on assigned jobs.
- Relate to the public and to customers in a professional, courteous and respectful manner.
- Follow daily Crew Lead procedures and protocols as set forth in orientations and trainings.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in utility construction.
- Strong coordination, time management, active listening and reasoning skills required.
- The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong and to work toward the solution of those issues.
- A minimum of 3 – 5 years of related skill, knowledge and experience in utility construction.
- Must be able to read, understand and apply information obtained from blueprints, surveys and job specifications.
- Computer skills required to send and receive information to/from office and UOM.
- An unwavering focus on safety.
- Ability to foresee safety hazards including asbestos hazards will in advance of them being an issue and address appropriately.
- Attend seminars as needed for advanced training.
Education and Experience:

- High School Diploma
- Erosion and Sediment Control Certification
- OSHA
- First Aid and CPR certification
- Confined Space Certification
- Competent Person Certification
- Asbestos Certification
- Railroad Work Area Certification
- Driver’s License, CDL a plus.

- Walk, bend, kneel, lift, stretch and sit.
- Effectively handle lifting of various objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Work extended hours out of doors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Travel is required.
