Job Description
The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), Office of Systems Planning is seeking a Transportation Planner that will serve as the Traffic Forecasting Coordinator on the Modeling. Forecasting and Telemetrics Team.
Responsibilities of this position will focus on coordinating traffic forecasting responsibilities to serve internal and external customers for project location and highway design. Job duties will entail completing traffic forecasts and delegating work assignments to other team members. Forecasts are for urban and rural areas and are developed using a series of tools and data such as historical traffic counts, origin-destination surveys, passive origin/destination data, census data, spreadsheets, ITE Trip Generation manuals, and urban/statewide travel demand models. This position will also be responsible for enhancing the capabilities of the forecasting tools available.
The position will require the ability to utilize and interpret output from travel demand models. The ability to understand and work with travel demand models for scenario analyses is also highly desired. This position will be required to utilize Geographic Information System software to support a variety of long-range transportation planning and forecasting activities for the Department. Knowledge and experience with TransCAD is a plus.
This position will be responsible for evaluating traffic impact studies and working with office staff to coordinate responses. This position will assist when needed for updates to the document, Guidelines for Traffic Impact Analysis.
In addition, this position will assist other team members to strengthen and improve the department's statewide travel demand modeling/forecasting efforts and analytical capabilities.
Other responsibilities may include representing the department and making presentations to various groups and performing other work tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university and experience equal to four years of full-time professional work in transportation planning*/engineering;
OR
licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Board of Engineering Examiners;
OR
employees with current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to three years of full-time work as a Transportation Planner 1 or Transportation Assistant.
* transportation planning includes preparing planning contracts and grants; preparing functional classification appeals; analyzing transportation project plans/reports to identify problems; developing portions of statewide transportation plans; or conducting/coordinating transportation research projects.
