Job Description

The Underground Surveyor is responsible for providing survey support to mine operations and other groups as required.

 

Accountability

The Underground Surveyor reports to the Chief Surveyor in all aspects of engineering operations.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

 Perform underground surveying, including but not limited to:

  • Long hole stope ring layout
  • Establish lasers and issue cut sheets for development headings
  • Layout geology drill holes for exploration drilling
  • Survey raises
  • Shaft surveying
  • CMS surveys, creation, and volumes
  • Survey surface stockpiles
  • Underground surveying using resection techniques
  • Daily mining advance surveys and survey control establishment
  • Assist in preparation of mine maps for miners and engineering
  • Ability to survey alone and unsupervised
  • Complete daily mine production reports

 

Qualifications

  • Excellent safety record
  • Associated degree in surveying or equivalent survey experience in a surface or underground mining operation preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience with total station surveying
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience surveying underground preferred
  • Solid knowledge and experience of surveying fundamentals, calculations, and note-taking techniques
  • Strong computer skills and ability to analyze technical data 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Leica Infinity, AutoCAD, Deswik, Leica and Trimble Total Station survey equipment, Leica Void scanner, Maptek’s I-Site Program, and Maptek’s I-Site Scanner preferred
  • Willing and able to work in a dynamic and changing environment 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required
  • Ability to demonstrate safety leadership required

Physical and Mental Demands and Requirements

The Underground Surveyor will work primarily underground with daily office work.

  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. in weight
  • Legally operate a vehicle typically requiring a Class A, B and/or C licenses
  • Periodically work in environmental extremes (i.e. hot or cold weather)
  • Sit for extended periods of time
  • Stay alert during periods of inactivity
  • Walk on uneven ground


Work Schedule and Personal Protective Equipment

The incumbent works a 40 hour/week schedule, primarily from Monday through Friday. Personal Protective Equipment required for the field work portion of this position includes, but is not limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots. All equipment must be MSHA approved as applicable.
