We are currently looking to fill the position of Staking Engineer for our Utica Service Center. This position works under the direction of the Supervisor of Staking Engineers.   An individual in this position will investigate, survey and stake electric distribution lines according to construction specifications and prepare staking sheets.  An individual in this position must be able to work independently with minimal supervision in addition to demonstrating a high level of responsibility and follow through. 

Nature and Scope of Position (Essential Duties and Responsibilities):

  • Support and incorporate the Cooperative’s Mission, Vision and Values in personal and professional behavior and decisions.     
  • Comply with Cooperative policies, procedures, goals and objectives and meets attendance and punctuality guidelines. 
  • Understand, observe and enforce cooperative safety and security procedures and report potentially unsafe conditions to department supervisor and/or safety department personnel.    
  • Investigate, survey and stake electric distribution lines according to construction specifications and prepare staking sheets.    
  • Assist Senior Staking Engineer in survey structure staking of aerial and underground electrical facilities.
  • Design line and perform staking for aerial and underground distribution projects along with secondary delivery voltages in accordance with all construction specifications.  
  • Prepare staking sheets, CAD and construction drawings, and all permits required for each staking project.
  • Involved with right of way acquisition and procurement as it relates to the construction of electric facilities.
  • Prepare necessary paperwork and performs field measurement required for joint pole use.
  • Respond to residential member requests for electric service.
  • Determine the required electrical facilities including transformer size, wire size, and voltage needed to serve the members/consumers power requirements.
  • Perform other related work in addition to other duties as may be assigned.

  • Experience and Education:  Two-year degree in civil engineering or surveying preferred, five years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training surrounding electric distribution line staking.  Working knowledge of construction practices and procedures.  Previous experience working with the general public and must demonstrate the importance of providing quality customer service. 
  • Certificates, Licenses and Training:   Individual must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio Driver’s License and good driving record.  The individual must be available for travel to training classes or schooling that might be held away from the assigned reporting location.  Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills to do the job at a high level of accomplishment. 
  • Language and Interpersonal Skills: Must possess excellent communications skills and treat others in a courteous and professional manner at all times.  Must be able to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from supervisors, members, landowners and the general public.  Ability to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions a must.  Ability to communicate with the general public in a pleasant and courteous manner at all times is essential in addition to excellent telephone skills.
  • Other Skills and Abilities:  Extensive knowledge of surveying equipment and methods used in line staking.  Must have the ability to prepare staking sheets, work orders and general documentation associated with distribution line staking.  Must be able to work unannounced overtime on occasion including emergency situations.  Strong computer skills in the use of AutoCAD, Microsoft Word and Excel along with knowledge of RUS Construction Standards for 12 kV distribution line.  Requires minimal supervision.

    • Safe working practices must be understood and utilized at all times.  The individual will work in both an office and outside environment.  While working outside an individual will be subject to adverse weather conditions and difficult terrain.     • Must be available for unscheduled overtime and be able to work during non-working hours which may include weekends and holidays.  As a result, the individual must maintain his or her personal residence within reasonable travel time of the Utica office.
