The Grower position is responsible for assisting in the management of crop growing operations for the greenhouse. This position is also responsible for the proper care of the greenhouse, including the principles and practices of plant cultivation, propagation, and protection. 

Essential Functions:

  • Discuss plant growing activities with Head Grower that are consistent with planned production schedules
  • Monitor growing conditions and discuss changes in humidity, moisture, temperature and other cultivation procedures with Head Grower to ensure conformance with quality control standards
  • Prepare space required for planned production
  • Determine nutrient and watering/moisture requirements
  • Responsible for identifying crop issues and diagnosis of unknown health or damage problems
  • Maintain records of crop activities and observations, including organic pesticide applications and growth records
  • Must learn fundamentals of Environmental Control System and be able to perform basic program changes, run graphs and interpret data that relate to system
  • Assist in training new employees in growing techniques and activities
  • Maintain current knowledge of growing techniques and technologies
  • Performs other related duties and projects as business needs require at the direction of management

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture or related field or;
  • Associates Degree in Horticulture or related field with 1-2 years’ experience or;
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in Greenhouse Growing

  • Must possess proficient English skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to communicate clearly with employees, management, customers and vendors
  • Ability to interpret product testing results and apply necessary actions
  • Ability to convey information in a clear and concise manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a culturally diverse business environment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to calculate figures, amounts, portions, percentages and volume in relation to the application of organic fertilizers, chemicals and water.
  • Knowledge and understanding of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the horticulture environment.
  • Knowledge of various plant materials and applications.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated approachability and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability, dependability and flexibility in work habits.
  • Possess a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute effectively as part of a team.

Physical Demands:  The physical demands listed below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. 

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, walk, reach with hands and arms, as well as stooping, kneeling, crouching and climbing.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, often lift up to 25 pounds, and constantly lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to maneuver throughout Company facilities, including negotiate stairs in some locations.
  • Ability to see at close and distant ranges, as well as peripheral vision to notice safety hazards.
  • Ability to demonstrate normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; maintain corrected hearing and vision to normal range. 

Work Environment:  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. 

  • Primarily in a greenhouse/warehouse environment with frequent exposure to seasonal conditions which may range from extreme heat and humidity in the summer to cold in the winter. Direct exposure to loud noise levels and moderate levels of dust, allergens and other chemicals.
