Job Summary
The Operator/ Heavy Haul Driver’s primary function is to operate all company equipment (such as lasers, backhoe, dozer, tile plow, excavator, skid steer, etc.) used in utility and drainage excavation, as well as drive a tractor trailer combination to transport his/her own heavy equipment. The following is a broad overview of the duties and responsibilities:
- Operates the construction equipment for maximum efficiency.
- Operates construction equipment to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
- Inspects work in progress to ensure that workmanship conforms to specifications.
- Transport heavy equipment and materials to and from specified locations.
- Inspects truck equipment and supplies.
- Maintains truck log according to state and federal regulations.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this standard procedure is to clearly define the job description of the Operator/ Heavy Haul Driver through the outline of his/her duties, authorities and responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITY
The Operator/ Heavy Haul Driver is directly responsible to the Production Manager for the proper discharge of his/her duties.
DUTIES
Overall:
- Manage the day-to-day aspects of completing the assigned job in an efficient and timely manner.
- Communicate with the Production Manager with any problems concerning equipment, customers, job specifications, etc.
- Have a thorough knowledge of the construction project and maintain a high standard of quality control at all times.
- Make sure One-Calls are done and current.
- Check to make sure that equipment is in good working condition and maintenance is performed in a timely manner. Greases, oils and performs minor repairs on equipment.
- See that safety rule and regulations are followed. Make sure that first aid kits and emergency numbers, if required, are available in case of emergencies.
- Forward all reports, receipts, and daily logs to the office each day.
- Measures distances from grade stakes, lasers and GPS coordinates.
- Levels earth to fine grade specifications.
Driving Company Equipment
- Drives truck to and from destinations.
- Positions tie downs and chains around items to secure equipment during transit.
- Loads or unloads truck at the proper job site.
- Maintains telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive delivery instructions.
- Maintains truck log, according to state and federal regulations.
- Inspects truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, breaks, gas, oil, and water.
- Performs emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires, installing light bulbs, tire chains, and spark plugs.
- Inspects truck for defect before and after trips and submits reports indicating truck conditions to supervisor.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have Lowboy trailer experience.
- Dozer/Excavator experience.
- Must have a Class A CDL and a good driving record.
