Job Description

The Office of Bridges and Structures is looking to hire an experienced civil/structural engineer to lead one of our Project Design sections.  This position requires an individual capable of leading engineers and technicians in the development of designs for the highway program. The position supervises 3 licensed engineers, 2 engineer associates and 3 CAD technicians. 
Experience with applying advanced structural and engineering design principles of a broad scope and complexity is necessary. 

This position requires an engineer licensed to practice civil/structural engineering in the State of Iowa.

Shift: Days, Monday through Friday.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Manage, supervise and direct the technical phase of detail plan production in a section of the Office of Bridges and Structures.  This includes performing structural design and analysis of different types of complex highway structures utilizing steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, and wood.
  • Manage the administrative phases of a bridge office detail section in planning, organizing, coordinating, and scheduling of the assigned work on the primary and interstate road system so that the goals of the production schedule are met.
  • Make or direct inspections and write reports containing recommendations and cost estimates on structures that must be repaired or reconstructed to maintain serviceability of the highway system.
  • Administer the personnel of the bridge detail section to assure that all personnel matters are effectively handled.
  • Supervise and review plans that are submitted by outside sources for our approval.
  • Provide support to the Office of Construction and the District Offices for timely solutions to construction problems involving structural concepts.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Licensed as a professional engineer, and the equivalent of three years of full-time licensed professional transportation or related civil engineering experience, one year of which must have included project management or leadwork responsibilities. Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau – Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board;

OR

a Masters degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural or transportation engineering; or an area closely related to transportation engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to two years of full-time experience as a Transportation Engineer.
