The newly formed South Dakota Military Heritage Alliance, Inc. is a non-profit organization looking for an Executive Director. The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader with a strong background and demonstrated evidence of engaging with the community, building partnerships and planning with the goal of achieving the organization’s mission and vision. 

You must have experience in staff and volunteer management, planning, financial management skills, a proven track record in raising funds, experience with local government agencies, and sponsorships.

Your background in large-scale event production and contingency planning is preferred. You should also be a proven consensus-builder and collaborator able to clearly articulate the organization’s goals and policies to the public and elected officials. Experience in conflict resolution, facilitation, and advocating for under-represented groups will be highly valued.

In this position, you will be the face of the organization, working closely with the Board of Directors, government officials, donors and the public. 

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Manage and provide strategic direction for all aspects of the organization including staffing, fundraising, program development, planning and logistics, marketing and media relations, and community partnerships
  • Maintain a working relationship with community, civic, business leaders, local and state government entities, and other essential stakeholders into the development plan as envisioned and determined by the Board of Directors.
  • Develop and implement consistent inventory and cost accounting policies, procedures, and operational reporting/metrics
  • Oversee and report on the organization’s results for board of directors
  • Prepare accurate and timely analyses that capture and communicate fundraising results, variances, and performance trends
  • Provide leadership to and manage the efforts of site staff to ensure appropriate support of all departments
  • Supervise the development of operations-based financial modeling
  • Coordinate and lead annual budget reviews, monthly and quarterly reviews, and periodic forecast updates with operational and senior management for all locations
  • Approve major systems implementations related to cost and inventory control
  • Retain a diverse, highly qualified staff and volunteers by providing career coaching, growth, and personal development for workers
  • Ensure that services and funding relationships are robust enough to meet or exceed strategic goals and objectives
  • Ensure commitment to and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations across the organization
  • Develop positive relationships with key stakeholders, including shareholders and government agencies
  • Proactively address challenges in the internal and external environment to protect business interests
  • Perform other duties as requested

  • Proven experience as Executive Director or equivalent position in a senior leadership role; non-profit management experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful strategic plans
  • Deep understanding of financial strategies and finance-related performance metrics
  • Demonstrated evidence in successful fundraising.
  • Experience leading, building, and working effectively with a diverse Board of Directors
  • Strong aptitude for verbal and written communication, presentation, and relationship development
  • In-depth knowledge of best practices in management and governance, specifically in a non-profit organization
