CURRENT OPPORTUNITY:  HVAC Lead Service Technician / Estimator 

The HVAC Lead Service Technician / Estimator’s primary responsibility is overseeing the HVAC Service Technicians / Installers and preparing estimates for HVAC projects.  He/she is responsible for assisting and developing HVAC Service Technicians and Installers to maintain high levels of safety, quality and productivity.  He/she also plans projects with customers, bids small projects, and builds strong relationships with customers and wholesalers.  In addition, he/she responds to service calls. 

Essential Functions:

  • Follow and help to enforce MWM safety, conduct and quality policies, including weekly Tool Box Talks as well as proper personal tools and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Be a resource and provide training to Service Technicians and Installers.
  • Coordinate HVAC meetings as needed.
  • Maintain a positive attitude to drive and build positive morale.
  • Work with journeymen and apprentices to maximize the apprenticeship training program.
  • Direct and coordinate staff on commercial installation projects.
  • Accurately bid small projects/remodels.
  • Perform material and equipment take offs.  Learn and perform AutoBid Mechanical and Sheet Metal Software for takeoff purposes.
  • Compare quotes and be able to speak intelligently about the differences. 
  • Check quotes against specifications to ensure materials meet pricing and specifications.
  • Review and finalize all bids with Operations and Sales.
  • Follow up on bid results in a timely manner.
  • Provide any value engineering required by the owner / contractor.
  • Estimate change order requests.
  • Help maintain bid schedule and coordinate with Chief Estimator in Sioux Falls.
  • Procure bid documents and distribute to vendors and subcontractors.
  • Manage subcontractors and projects until completion.
  • Provide information for accurate billing of customers.
  • Resolve unfavorable variances from established budgets or schedules.
  • Coordinate tasks with other MWM departments and foremen as appropriate.
  • Responsible for initial job mobilization and coordination of trailers, lifts, material storage, tools, etc. Assure efficient utilization of equipment.
  • Responsible for all on-site documentation (checklists, safety signoff, service sheets, and other documentation that is relevant for the job completion).
  • Review daily logs and time cards of Service Techs and Installers.
  • Attend all meetings associated with any given project as required.
  • Help ensure proper communication between the office, field, customers and city officials.
  • Provide progress reports of jobs. Review job cost reports, job tracking and quality control.
  • Complete close-out paperwork and returns.
  • Work with Operations and Sales to help ensure profitability of department.
  • Update and maintain 3-week look ahead schedule / manpower.
  • Make decisions by analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution.
  • Inspect equipment, structures or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems.
  • Operate powered equipment including hand tools, stationary machines and others as required in a safe manner at all times.
  • Travel as necessary within the region to job sites, corporate meetings, and training events.
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Experienced and knowledgeable in the responsibilities and challenges of Service Technicians and Installers.
  • Ability to read and interpret written materials, architectural plans, drawings and mechanical designs. 
  • Good computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Office 365.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple jobs simultaneously.  Ability to work well under pressure, meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines.
  • Competent, responsible, organized and team-oriented.
  • Ability to work alone as well as with a team.
  • Ability to take direction with minimal to no supervision.
  • Strong critical thinking skills on ways to be more competitive in the bid market.
  • Ability to work overtime or on-call as needed.
  • Ability to lawfully drive a motor vehicle and maintain a current driver’s license in order to commute to the various current or prospective job sites in the region.
  • Ability to obtain DOT medical card.
  • Reliable transportation to get to the shop.
  • Ability to maintain an active Journeyman's license in all states you perform work in.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Completion of High School Diploma or equivalent
  • HVAC Service and/or Installation Journeyman experience required

Physical Requirements:  The job’s functions require the following physical demands:

  • Ability to be off the ground in a scissor lift or other piece of equipment
  • Must have the ability to independently lift and carry objects safely that weigh up to 25 pounds routinely, 50 pounds frequently and 75 pounds occasionally
  • Must be able to climb and maintain balance on ladders and scaffold
  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle to customer job sites and required meetings
