Summary

Balfour Beatty in Dallas, TX is currently seeking a Media Relations Manager to join our team! The Media Relations Manager creates, plans, delivers and measures effective and engaging external communications for key customer and industry stakeholder audiences to drive value and enhance and/or defend the reputation of the business. This role will also amplify our thought leadership within target markets (both industry and geographic).

The Media Relations Manager will work very closely with stakeholders and subject matter experts to identify stories that will reach and interest the external audience base (i.e. potential and existing clients, industry partners, user groups, and employees). The position requires a high level of professional maturity, emotional intelligence and collaboration between the company’s marketing representatives, sister companies, and parent company, to align with and support group wide policies, messaging, brand standards, and strategic objectives. This position will create, embed, instill and drive the media processes and procedures and assume responsibility for developing and/or issuing reactive media responses.

Essential Functions

  • Develop, defend and promote Balfour Beatty’s national messaging and key value positioning.
  • Contribute to the creation, delivery and measurement of a proactive national media and public relations strategy that aligns efforts with the broader communication and company strategy and that results in earned media placements including bylined articles, guest blogs, expert commentators, white papers, etc.
  • Coordinate and provide pre-interview briefings and coaching for thought leaders/subject matter experts/panellists prior to media interviews or events and staffing all media-facing interviews.
  • Create a current, relevant content pipeline that aligns with strategic priorities of the business and reflects our culture and key interests in the communities and markets we serve (inclusive of key messages platforms, web copy, briefings, Q&A responses, reactive media statements, among others—ensuring on brand, factually accurate and not open to misinterpretation).
  • Research and recommend various industry-relevant themes and hot topics to produce Balfour Beatty’s thought leadership/position to positively amplify our brand, culture and areas important to our industry/markets and key stakeholders.
  • Measure earned media effectiveness on quarterly basis with share of voice analysis and provide insights on trends to inform the business.
  • Partner with our marketing/communications teams across the country on local media and public relation efforts.
  • Partner with UK corporate communications team for Group-wide opportunities and news and seek collaborative opportunities.
  • Manage the media hotline, including providing issues and crisis front-line support.
  • Advise and guide business leaders, projects and enabling function teams on how to engage with the media and other key stakeholders to achieve their goals through individual coaching and media training.
  • Build and maintain positive, first point-of-contact relationships with key media targets and with client and partner communication leads.

Minimum Requirements

  • BA or BS degree in Communications, Technical Writing, Media, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or a related field required.
  • 5+ years of experience in Media Relations, Public Relations, Communications or a related field required.
  • Proven success in executing business-to-business thought leadership strategies.
  • Has experience executing effective national PR campaigns and possesses the drive to craft new, creative approaches.
  • Has a background (in-house or agency) in executing business-to-business media/public relations and thought leadership strategies.
  • Strong research, writing, story-telling and editing skills including the ability to write in a variety of styles (including persuasive and editorial styles) that is necessary to adapt to multiple audiences and media.

Preferred Experience

  • Previous construction industry media relations experience preferred, but not required. 
  • Able to build constructive and effective relationships both internally and externally, put others at ease and establish rapport; relate to all kinds of people at all levels inside and outside the organization.
  • Able to deal with concepts and complex issues comfortably; is seen as intellectually sharp, capable, agile; can connect the dots across different themes, markets and trends.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organization skills.
