Job Description

This position is located within the Location and Environment Bureau's Location section and performs under the general supervision of a Professional Engineer.  The person in this position performs several vital technical functions as well as support roles within the section and office including, but not limited to the following:

  • Application of engineering design for highway improvements of a broad scope and complexity. 
  • Design quality assurance and control 
  • Project level GIS data collection & coordination
  • Transportation planning & environmental compliance 
  • Training and guidance of other design team members

The person in this position takes an active role in the preliminary design and determination of alternatives to be studied, develops a range of concepts and identifies field study corridors for other staff use in data collection.   This person helps to complete a comprehensive list of the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative and prepares and finalizes engineering feasibility and planning studies and evaluations necessary for the determination and approval of a highway route location.
 
This person also provides transportation planning support & environmental compliance review by:

  • Combining the highway design with the environmental constraints in the project area to develop alternatives that meet the purpose and need for the project while avoiding and minimizing impacts to the environmental resources
  • Evaluating the potential and actual impacts of projects on identified environmental resources
  • Developing materials to communicate the potential impacts with the public and other agencies charged with the stewardship of the potentially impacted environmental resources.
  • Evaluating of changes to projects throughout the project development process and construction for compliance to environmental commitments and regulations.

The person in this position must have competency with Windows, MicroStation, Microsoft Office applications and Geographic Information Systems applications.   This person will use Microstation and ArcMap to develop, display, analyze, and communicate proposed highway improvements, design various highway improvement projects, analyze proposed improvements and ensure environmental compliance.  This person must apply engineering principles during the development of highway improvement alternatives, be willing to pursue advancements in technology and applications that facilitate additional functionality within the office, and work effectively in a team based environment.
 
This person must possess personal ethics, honesty, initiative, flexibility and the ability to maintain responsibility for producing quality work products.
 
Shift: Days, flex time available. Some overtime and travel may be required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university course work with a major in civil/transportation engineering, community development planning, economics, environmental engineering, mathematics, regional planning, transportation planning or urban planning;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of professional experience in civil/transportation engineering, community development planning, economics, environmental engineering, mathematics, regional planning, transportation planning or urban planning for each year of the required education.
