The Maintenance Technician is responsible for assisting with maintenance of all building systems including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, safety, and waste management.

Essential Functions:

  • Inspect buildings, electrical systems, grounds, and equipment to ensure safe, well-maintained conditions; identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair
  • Perform maintenance of electrical systems (replace light bulbs and sockets, clean and repair circuit breaker panels, etc.)
  • Assist in the setup of ventilation, refrigeration and other systems and conduct repairs when necessary
  • Maintain heating and plumbing systems to ensure functionality
  • Inspect alarm systems (fire, protection) and schedule repairs when needed
  • Perform manual repairs when necessary (fix locks, replace windows etc.)
  • Conduct general upkeep procedures (e.g. landscaping, snow removal) and other tasks as assigned (painting, carpentry etc.)
  • Maintain inventory records for equipment and supplies
  • Reports to Facilities Manager with work updates
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Performs other related duties and projects as business needs require at direction of management.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in maintenance or similar position
  • Certificate in building maintenance technology or relevant field is preferred
  • In-dept knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems
  • Advanced understanding of general maintenance procedures and techniques
  • Experienced in operating a variety of equipment, including snow blowers, forklifts, lawn mowers, and hand tools

Communication Skills:

  • Must possess proficient English skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must possess effective oral communication and interpersonal skills with ability to deal with all levels of personnel in a professional and effective manner.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with employees, management, customers and vendors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a multi-cultural business environment.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must be a self-starter.
  • Must be able to work at high heights and use ladders in a safe manner.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of proper safety techniques and procedures while using chemicals and equipment.
  • Understanding of methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in maintenance, repair and electrical work.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment.
  • Ability to properly perform basic welding.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices and Safety Data Sheets.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the horticulture environment.
  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical and HVAC systems.
  • Ability to read technical manuals and drawings.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability, dependability and flexibility in work habits.
  • Possess a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute effectively as part of a team.

Physical Demands:  The physical demands listed below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, walk, reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects; as well as stooping, kneeling, crawling, crouching and climbing.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds, often lift up 50 pounds, and constantly lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to maneuver throughout Company facilities, including negotiate stairs in some locations; ability to enter confined spaces.
  • Ability to see at close and distant ranges, as well as color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; ability to smell; maintain corrected hearing to normal range.

Work Environment:  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position.

  • Primarily a in a greenhouse/farming facility with frequent exposure to seasonal conditions which may range from extreme heat and humidity in the summer to cold in the winter. Direct exposure to loud noise levels and moderate levels of dust, allergens and other chemicals.
