Job Description

The Human Resources Generalist provides daily support to the Human Resources Department regarding employee relations, benefits coordination, payroll support, talent acquisition/recruiting support, candidate interview facilitation, compensation analysis, worker’s compensation support, talent management support, and related objectives.  This position routinely interacts with all internal employees and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Human Resources Director.  

 

Accountability

The Human Resources Generalist reports directly to the Human Resources Director.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Maintains knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks and ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Assume day-to-day administrative functions of the HR department
  • Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition and morale; and training and development
  • Assist HR Director in developing management tools and processes that help facilitate the Supervisor/Managers job such as position descriptions, orientation process, supervisor training, and wage comparison survey
  • Facilitate rewarding relationships and collaborate with staff and other departments.
  • Recruits, interviews, and facilitates the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings
  • Facilitates new hire orientation and implementation of employee recognition programs
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law
  • Perform verification's of employment
  • Assist with benefits process, including data entry, fielding questions from employees, and open enrollment
  • Coordinate the overflow of work for administrative needs and coordinate functions to HR staff.
  • Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff
  • Assist with relocation and temporary housing placement for newly hired employees
  • Prepare and compile administrative and legal documents required for the new hire process; forward documents to required personnel and maintain documents in appropriate files
  • Compile and maintain confidential and sensitive information such as personnel files; ensure documents are current, complete and accurate
  • Implement and oversee recruitment and retention strategies
  • Track and maintain HR reports including pre-employment, manpower headcount, and relocation reimbursements
  • Complete required reports and other documentation accurately and in a timely manner
  • Answer multi-lined telephone system and direct calls to appropriate individuals or departments and relay messages
  • Readily assist with special events, projects and activities

 

Knowledge/Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or Business Administration or related field preferred
  • Minimum 2-3 years of HR experience, mining or industrial environment preferred
  • SHRM-CP or PHR a plus
  • Working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines, including compensation practices, organizational diagnosis, employee relations, diversity, performance management, and federal and state respective employment laws
  • Proficient in MS Word and Excel, and familiarity with HRIS programs

Physical and Mental Demands and Requirements

The Human Resources Generalist will work primarily in an office environment with periodic work in the field environment. The incumbent must be able to:

  • Lift and carry up to 25 lbs. in weight.
  • Legally operate a vehicle typically requiring a Class 4 and/or 5 licenses
  • Periodically work in environmental extremes (i.e. hot or cold weather)
  • Sit for extended periods of time
  • Stay alert during periods of inactivity
  • Walk on uneven ground

 

Work Schedule and Personal Protective Equipment

The incumbent is expected to work a 40 hour/week schedule, primarily from Monday through Friday.  Personal Protective Equipment required for the field work portion of this position includes, but is not limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots.  All equipment must be MSHA approved as applicable.
