This is journeyman level work in the fabrication of various types of insulating materials from fiberglass, foamglass, mineral fibers, synthetic rubber, and other products commonly used in the trade.

Work involves installing insulation on steam, hot and chill water piping, refrigeration lines, and air conditioning ducts. Work also involves the proper anchoring of insulation with spotwelded pins, tie wires, metal bands, screws, and other fasteners. Assignments are made in the form of written or oral instructions. Work is inspected for satisfactory compliance with instruction, although routine repairs are usually made independently without supervision or review.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Fabricates insulating materials from fiberglass, foamglass, mineral fibers, synthetic rubber, and other products commonly used in the insulation installation trade.

Installs insulation on steam, hot water, chill water, refrigeration lines, piping and fittings, and air conditioning ducts.

Covers insulation on pipes with canvas and installs vapor barriers, waterproofing products, and metal protection sheets.

Anchors insulation with spotwelded pins, tie wires, metal bands, screws, and other fasteners.

Measures, computes, and determines the correct type insulation needed for jobs; provides orders for materials required.

Receives work orders and carries out insulation duties.

Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a standard vocational or high school and some experience as a journeyman insulator; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, and tools of the insulating trade.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to work from oral and written instructions, sketches, and diagrams.

Ability to maintain good relationships with personnel of other departments.

Ability to work from ladders and scaffolds.

Skill in the use of standard tools and equipment of the insulating trade.

 

 

 

 

 

2.             Assumes responsibility for maintaining related records.

 

a.                    Documents test and inspection dates and results.

 

b.                   Maintains inventory records for welding supplies used and utilized on jobs.

 

c.                    Completes work orders, lists materials issued and used, and documents work repairs.

 

3.             Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with area staff and with management.

 

a.                    Assists area staff as needed.

 

b.                   Ensures that management is appropriately informed of area activities and of any significant problems.

 

4.                   Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned.

 

a.                    Ensures regulatory requirements and established procedures are met.

 

b.                   Follows safety requirements.

 

c.                    Ensures that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.

 

d.                   Completes special projects as assigned.

 

e.                    Attends and participates in meetings as required.

 

 

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

 

1.                   Assignments are completed in accordance with engineering specifications and codes.  Work is completed efficiently and effectively.

 

2.                  Work equipment is well maintained and in good operating condition.  Unscheduled downtime is minimized. 

 

3.                   Problems and malfunctions are promptly addressed and resolved.

 

4.                   Maintenance records, work orders, and inventory logs are accurate and up-to-date.

 

5.                   Established safety and regulatory requirements are adhered to.

 

6.                   Management is appropriately informed of area activities and of any significant problems. 

 

7.                   Good communication and coordination exist with area staff and departments.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education/Certification:        High school graduate or equivalent. 

                                                               

 

Required Knowledge:              Knowledge of heating, water and drainage system pipes, fittings, and fixtures.

                                                                Knowledge of building blueprints and schematics.

 

Experience Required:                      One to two years of related experience.

Skills/Abilities:                             Able to work well independently.

                                                                Good problem solving skills.

                                                                Solid hand/eye coordination.

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

                                                                Worker is subject to varying inside and/or outside temperatures, which may include extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees) or extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees).

 

                                                                Work is performed both inside and outside.  Subject to weather.

 

                                                                The worker is subject to fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc., which affect the skin or respiratory system.
