Location: Grinnell Maintenance Garage
Shift: Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, hours may vary and subject to call 24 hours a day during emergency conditions.
This position is for a Highway Maintenance Supervisors (HMS). Primary responsibilities of this position are the planning and maintenance of all primary roads assigned to the Grinnell, Malcom and Tama Maintenance Garage. The Highway Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for all the roadway maintenance on approximately 625 lane miles of primary highway, that includes 27 miles of Interstate 80.
This position will include the supervision & management of personnel, equipment, material and facilities involved with the maintenance of the road surface, shoulders, bridges and structures, roadside, drainage, road services, signs and other features within the Grinnell, Malcom and Tama maintenance area. This person will report directly to the District Maintenance Manager (DMM).
This position is responsible for:
- Assigning work, evaluating performance, handling discipline, and other personnel related matters
- Responsible for inventory, work program, gathering and evaluating weather data, and other computer related duties.
- React to emergency situations.
- Assist the District Maintenance Manager (DMM) in monitoring the maintenance area expenditures.
- Serves as law enforcement and the public’s first contact with the Iowa Department of Transportation for this area.
As a Highway Maintenance Supervisor, you’ll contribute to the DOT’s mission by providing senior level leadership to support a safe transportation system and ensuring the public investment in the system infrastructure is protected and preserved such as:
- Directly supervises personnel and operations of multiple maintenance garages.
- Serves as the primary contact to determine work needs during emergencies.
- Monitors, inspects, and documents conditions of roadways to identify needs.
- Review, assess, and determine needs for maintenance, replacement and/or additional equipment.
- Ensure compliance with environmental and safety issues for buildings, grounds, and staff.
- Act as an integral part of the management team.
- Authorizes purchases, delivery, and storage of materials needed.
- Working in adverse weather conditions.
- At times operate snow removal equipment.
CDL: Possess a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit upon hire; within 45 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class B CDL with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and maintained until getting your Class A CDL; and within five (5) months following appointment, a valid Class A CDL with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and maintained in order to continue employment.
Drug & Alcohol Testing: Requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer’s random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
Additional Requirements:
- Post offer, pre-employment physical.
- Must respond to emergency situations as required.
- Must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
- Some overnight travel may be required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) Eight years of full-time work experience in highway maintenance, highway construction, or highway materials inspection.
2) All of the following (a and b):
- Four years of full-time work experience in highway maintenance, highway construction, or highway materials inspection; and
- A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in business administration, construction technology/management, or engineering equals one year of full-time experience.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twelve months of full-time work as a supervisor in highway maintenance or construction.

Additional Qualification Requirements
- Positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
- In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), this job requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
- Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
- Employees must respond to emergency situations as required.
