As a member of the Distribution Team, and reporting to the Director of Distribution, the Safety Specialist is responsible for promoting employee safety through accident prevention, training and compliance with OSHA, HAZMAT & DOT regulations, and safety policies. The individual in this role will work closely with regional distribution center leaders as well as corporate staff to ensure polices are followed and all safety measures and training are in place. 

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Promote and contribute to a safety-first culture that focuses on accident and incident prevention throughout all of the Company’s operations
  • Identify safety risks throughout the Distribution Center Network and Corporate facility and work with the appropriate managers to develop and prioritize corrective actions to address such risks.
  • Assist all levels of management to implement and comply with OSHA regulations and other health and safety laws, regulations, and standards applicable to organization activities
  • Perform detailed audits of the work environment, equipment, and procedures to assure compliance with government health and safety regulations and recordkeeping specific to OSHA, HAZMAT and DOT guidelines
  • Lead, develop and assist in training employees on SOPs for Distribution Center & Corporate Safety
  • Investigate near misses and accidents and work with relevant departments to develop and recommend corrective actions and monitor implementation of adopted corrective actions. Create and maintain records for reporting
  • Maintain OSHA Form 300 Log, Form 300A Summary and Form 301 Reports and report incidents to OSHA and other government agencies as required by law
  • Act as primary Company contact with government agencies in health and safety-related matters, including investigations and audits
  • Be a permanent member of the Corporate Safety Committee, working to promote employee communication regarding health and safety concerns and assist in development & implementation of standards for Distribution Operations in accordance with Federal & State requirements
  • Develop and implement safety protocols for contractors and visitors
  • Work cross-functionally with Product Management and Distribution Team to maintain administrative responsibilities regarding product hazardous identification coding and necessary ERP data maintenance
  • Coordinate yearly fire extinguisher training and emergency evacuation drills for Corporate and Distribution Center locations
  • This position has a 10% - 15% travel commitment throughout the fiscal year
  • Help conduct personal protective equipment assessments in accordance with required regulations
  • Manages the Company’s DC Safety Shoe reimbursement program. Engage Cooperative Membership as Subject Matter Expert regarding safety & regulatory compliance
  • Maintain, analyze, and report health and safety statistics to management on a regular basis
  • Develop an annual budget for health and safety-related activities
  • Develop and assist in implementing onboarding training for new employees and safety job-specific SOPs and records management for regional distribution facilities.

Desired qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or, associate degree in Operations or Regulatory; 3-5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
  • Ability to commit to a 10% - 15% travel component.
  • Distribution center operations experience and regulatory certifications preferred (OSHA 10 or 30, HAZWOPER, etc.)
  • Knowledge of governmental regulations as they apply to product distribution, particularly HAZMAT handling and Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety regulations, including OSHA.
  • Knowledge of distribution operations (i.e., shipping, receiving, layouts, flow patterns, freight) and how governmental regulations affect those operations.
  • Problem-solving skills: listening to, interpreting, and meeting the needs of others; diagnosing and rectifying problems.
  • Ability to collect data, evaluate corrective action, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to develop efficient regulatory and supply chain work procedures.
  • Ability to listen to others to identify concerns and needs.
  • Ability to communicate cross-functionally with others in order to influence attitudes and actions.
  • Ability to communicate information across different individuals, departments, and external parties.
  • Skill in facilitating open lines of communication.
  • Ability to use current word processing and spreadsheet programs (Word, Excel).
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures manuals.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, and percentages.
  • Ability to recognize inconsistencies in information (ability to attend to details).
  • Project management skills: establishing objectives, timelines and deadlines; action planning to meet deadlines
