Location: Bridges and Structures Bureau, Ames, Iowa
The Bridges and Structures Bureau is seeking to hire a Transportation Engineer that will be an essential part of a Preliminary Design team. This position requires an individual capable of applying engineering principles in the design of preliminary bridge structures and transportation improvement projects of a broad scope and complexity. Experience with applying advanced hydrologic/hydraulic engineering design principles is a plus.  This position requires an engineer licensed to practice civil engineering in the State of Iowa.
 
Responsibilities of the position:

  • Develop preliminary bridge and culvert plans in the preliminary section of the Bridges and Structures Bureau.  This includes performing hydrologic and hydraulic design and analysis of various types of complex highway structures.  Highway structures include bridges and culverts. 
  • Make inspections and write reports containing recommendations and estimates on structures that must be repaired or reconstructed to maintain serviceability of the highway system.
  • Review and recommend improvements to current hydraulic and drainage policy and procedures.
  • Provide support to the Construction and Materials Bureau and the Districts for timely solutions to construction and maintenance problems involving hydraulic and drainage issues.
  • Review plans that are submitted by consulting engineers and outside agencies for approval.

Additional Requirements:

  • Licensed as a professional engineer. Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau – Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) All of the following (a and b):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Three years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering, one year of which must have included project management or lead work responsibilities.
2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Two years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering, one year of which must have included project management or lead work responsibilities; and
c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer.
