The Berg Group is looking for an experienced Superintendent to join our team in Phoenix! The Superintendent will be joining the Berg Team that has been a respected leader in the commercial drywall industry for over 50 years.  We are a growing company with offices in Phoenix, AZ, Chaska, MN, Carlsbad, CA, Naples, FL, and Sacramento, CA.

The Superintendent is responsible for managing the day to day commercial construction operations (Drywall, Paint, Plaster, Acoustical Ceilings) performed by The Berg Group across multiple job sites within the area.  The Superintendent will lead a team of foreman (and indirectly field laborers) to safely construct and exceed production goals set by the project team. The Superintendent is key in bridging communications between the project manager and the field.   In this role, the Superintendent is responsible to ensure all projects are staffed accordingly to meet the project schedule.  Safety, Production, Quality, and Craftsmanship are top priorities as they deliver on core services and set The Berg Group up to continue the relationship with the client onto the next job site.

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience within the interior and exterior construction scopes of work, including the drywall/steel stud framing industry. Experience with pre-fabrication is a plus as well! 

Essential Functions

Preconstruction

  • An active participant in all pre-construction meetings with assigned Foreman and Project Team.
  • Review site conditions prior to mobilization to ensure efficiency during construction.
  • Communicate with the General Contractor and other trades to develop a team relationship as well as ensuring project schedule and production goals are met.
  • Identify and resolve risks (i.e. need for lifts, tying off) and opportunities to pick up the scope on projects prior to mobilization.
  • Initial material order at pre-construction meeting while reviewing the job; subsequent material orders are executed by the foreman.
  • Identify and work with the Project Management team to proactively resolve any bid production discrepancies; buy into bid productions and convey that to the foremen.

Production/Execution

  • Manage the foremen team and hold them accountable to Berg’s stated production goals for the specific project.
  • Review daily/weekly production tracking to determine if Berg is hitting bid levels by activity.
  • Keep project team(s) informed daily as to accurate productions and other relevant field conditions observed in job walks.
  • Review work in progress on all projects and ensure it meets The Berg Group’s Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards.
  • Meet weekly with the Project Manager as it relates to job tracking, percent complete, and what scopes are complete i.e. fireproofing, and informs needed manpower adjustments.
  • Regularly perform safety audits in coordination with Safety teams onsite visits and follow up.
  • Help review and streamline all of Berg’s services on-site to ensure efficiency.
  • Maintains robust technology knowledge on Mosaic/Plexxis foreman app, BirdDogHR and other tools pushed out by Berg to iPads to connect field and project management as well as hire and onboard talent.
  • Champion/train foreman team on the job, safety, technology, hiring practices, etc.

Field People Management

  • Multi-site responsibility and oversight of commercial construction operations
  • Management of a Berg foreman team of (5-15) and up to 150 field employees.
  • Co-manage warehouse personnel and related logistics
  • Identify, recruit and develop future field/general construction leaders within the Berg Team
  • Actively oversee and coach foremen around project budget, materials purchasing, and manpower planning.
  • Assist Foreman in identifying best practices in job sequencing and speaking on behalf of Berg to clients and general contractors as needed.
  • Mentor and encourage the growth of all employees by building morale on project sites with positive reinforcement and feedback.
  • Regularly share accurate job site progress with foremen; motivate them to push their teams and ultimately exceed bid profit through visibility.

Basic Skills and Qualifications

  • Knowledge of all core service offerings: Drywall (layout – framing – hanging), Paint, Plaster, and Acoustical Ceilings. Specialty knowledge of one of Berg’s offerings is extremely helpful.
  • Proven job progression from laborer to foreman.
  • Maintain confidentiality and leadership in all aspects of the role
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, groups, and in one-on-one situations.
  • Detail-oriented, thorough, and production/goal-driven.
  • Ability to proactively (and reactively) solve operational problems to increase efficiencies productions.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend construction documents and blueprints
  • Keen ability to accurately articulate work direction and delegate to trusted subleaders and employees.
  • Computer skills; proficient in MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Outlook, and document editing software (e.g., Mosaic/Foreman App, BirdDogHR, PlanGrid, ProCore, iPad, PC, etc.).
  • Weekly payroll responsibility for assigned region/projects

Education/Experience Requirements

  • 5 + years of related experience in the construction field; or an equivalent mix of education and field experience.
  • The ideal candidate will have shown field career progression and may have previously held foremen and/or safety officer role(s).
