We are seeking a Mechanic to maintain our fleet of equipment on San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) and Southern California Edison (SCE).

Job Summary: 

The Mechanic is responsible to ensure our vehicle fleet and equipment is kept in safe working condition, compliant with DOT requirements and is in-service for our customers. The Mechanic possesses the knowledge to inspect, diagnose, problem solve and perform necessary repairs to our vehicles and equipment. The Mechanic proactively monitors our vehicle fleet by performing regular checkups and adopting a scheduled maintenance plan to avoid overhaul repairs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Cooperate with Supervision to establish priorities to manage locations, repairs, and maintenance of equipment ranging from but not limited to trucks, pickups, chippers, aerial lifts, chainsaws, etc. 
  • Responsible for DOT maintenance and inspection requirements of all required vehicles. 
  • Provide regular servicing to include using jacks, cranes and various handheld and power tools to dismantle and reassemble heavy equipment.
  • Examine critical parts and operating components of heavy equipment for possible wear and tear, defects, or other damage with use of specialized tools but also with trained eyes and ears. 
  • Plan out daily work activities and be able to adjust to changing conditions which can require independent action without close supervision.
  • Check for components and parts that need to be welded and then, with a gas or electric welder, perform the work.
  • Make adjustments of engines, as well as any additional assemblies such as gear transmissions and hydraulic. 
  • Perform all necessary repairs to include the replacement of worn or damaged parts.
  • Stay informed on new equipment, specifications, standard practices, operating procedures, etc. 
  • Safeguard employees and public from hazards in and around work area (utilize hand signals, cones, signs, etc).  
  • Complete and provide supervision and administrative staff with accurate and timely reports such as timesheets, repairs, maintenance, etc.   
  • Control costs including effective use vendors and suppliers and maintain professional vendor relations. 
  • Monitor vendor for timely repairs and maintain and provide administrative staff all external and internal field maintenance and repair records.  
  • Assume responsibility for the inspection and proper working conditions of tools, truck, and other work equipment.
  • Test vehicles, equipment and tools on a regular basis to ensure operating safely and efficiently. 

Preferred:

  • Class B CDL or higher
  • Maintains existing inventory of tools
  • Automotive Service Excellence Mechanics Certification (A.S.E. Certification)
  • Certification for fleet repairs / maintenance 
  • Experience working on and/or repairing hydraulic systems on fleet vehicles 
  • Certification for welding
  • Certification for aerial device repairs / maintenance 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Due to the inherent nature of the position and requirements to work with or around heavy equipment employees must possess mental and physical endurance for extended periods of time.  
  • Must be able to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather (rain, heat, sun, cold) and nature (irritating plants, insects, dust) while completing work assignments. 
  • Must be able to wear necessary PPE as per task assigned.
  • Must be able to walk, climb and work from ladders or at various heights or uneven or slippery surfaces while handling equipment or material.
  • Must be able to safely drive a company vehicle. 
  • Must be able to write, read and comprehend written and verbal job instructions / information.
  • Must have transportation to and from the show up location.
  • Must be able to enter and exit a vehicle numerous times a day. 
  • Operate and service equipment, such as company vehicle, aerial trim lift, chipper and stump grinder.
  • Must be able to lift, move and maneuver heavy weights up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis, but up to 10 pounds on a frequent basis.
  • Must be able to work around loud noise from machines, chain saw, wood chipper and other equipment with hearing protection.
  • Must be able to work with hands above head for extended periods of time.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening and MVR.
