Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited (BELCO) is pleased to invite applications for the following open position:

 

Engineering and System Reliability Group has an opening for the position of Overhead Distribution Engineer.  This role is responsible for electrical distribution design and technical requirements associated with the construction, operations and maintenance of BELCO’s transmission and distribution systems.

Applications are encouraged from candidates experienced in roles such as Distribution Engineer, Rural Service Engineer, Overhead Design/Construction Engineer or similar.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts distribution system audits to ensure compliance with NESC, NEC as well as local codes and regulations
  • Manages third party pole attachments and easement agreements with landowners and other utilities
  • Liaises with Government and third party service providers around the utilization of passive infrastructure ensuring compliance with NESC and other relevant codes and regulations
  • Plans layout of pole lines and underground cable and solves problems, such as determining height, location, spacing, guying, grounding and insulating of poles
  • Completes periodic review of design and construction standards
  • Recommends system configuration and equipment specification changes
  • Reviews and advises on methods of work, interpretation of engineering drawings and makes recommendations for improvements in the construction process, in particular where safety, reliability and risk issues are identified
  • Sources and implements training for Operations and Maintenance staff
  • Develops and executes yearly planning and capital improvement study for the overhead distribution system
  • Provides engineering design and project management for distribution system modifications and capital refurbishments
  • Manages the performance and development of assigned employees

 

Key Job Requirements:

  • Electrical Engineering degree from a recognized University or equivalent qualification, satisfying the requirement for registration as a professional or chartered engineer
  • Minimum of five years of directly related experience in distribution line design and construction
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable engineering Codes, Standards and Regulations
  • Working knowledge of industrial best practices relating to distribution systems
  • Working knowledge of wood pole distribution systems
  • Working knowledge of Government Health & Safety legislation and regulations
  • Strong project management skills; a project management designation would be an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to liaise with contractors, suppliers and BELCO employees at all levels
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and develop staff
