Job Description
GEI is growing and we are seeking a Geotechnical Engineer in our Marquette, Michigan office. This individual will assist with multiple tasks including but not limited to: management of subsurface explorations, development of geotechnical engineering reports, materials testing laboratory management and oversight, construction field services scheduling and coordination, laboratory and field materials testing and reporting.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
The Geotechnical Engineer will coordinate, oversee, and manage subsurface exploration activities, develop geotechnical engineering reports, support the Marquette design team with geotechnical design activities. Other responsibilities include support the construction services team by helping to oversee the performance and expansion of a 5 to 8 person construction inspection and testing department supporting heavy civil, earthwork, building, industrial, power generation and/or environmental projects. Primary responsibilities include:
- Coordinate with clients to schedule and perform subsurface exploration activities at various project sites.
- Coordinate, direct and oversee drilling subcontractors during the exploration.
- Perform visual engineering classifications and assign lab testing on the recovered samples.
- Develop a geotechnical engineering report in support of the project design.
- Support the GEI design team with geotechnical aspects of projects.
- Candidate should be willing and able to assist with managing daily schedules of a team construction testing and inspection technicians.
- The ability and knowledge to assist with maintaining various existing laboratory testing certifications and validations.
- Coordination and tracking of employee certifications and training as it pertains to geotechnical testing and materials testing.
- Preliminary review of daily field test reports prior to Senior Engineering Review.
- Preparation of testing reports from laboratory test data.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- BS in Civil and/or Geotechnical Engineering.
- 5 to 10 years of related experience is required.
- Demonstrate experience both in terms of industry knowledge and positions of leadership.
- Ability to assist geotechnical engineering professionals with exploration and reporting.
- AutoCAD and Civil 3D experience is desired.
- Ability to learn new software as needed.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to properly and effectively train others to add strength and deepen the overall teams’ skillsets.
- A working knowledge of laboratory testing procedures pertaining to soil, concrete and rock.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with and manage multi-faceted teams.
- Ability to strive for excellence in all aspects of job performance.
- Must have a strong commitment to the success and welfare of our clients and our team.
- Must act in an ethical, professional, and respectful manner at all times.
- Must be driven to succeed and committed to achieving company and project goals.
- PE or ability to obtain a PE.
- Must be willing to travel for short durations.
