Lifespace Communities would like to introduce the opportunity to become a Benefits Specialist/HR Assistant at our Home Office located in West Des Moines, IA. This will be a full-time, 6-month temporary assignment with the option to extend or for permanent placement.

JOB SUMMARY:  The Human Benefits Specialist/HR Assistant supports the administration of the company's benefits programs and processes. 

ORGANIZATIONAL AND REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:  Reports to the director of compensation and benefits.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide exceptional customer service support to internal and external customers. Serve as the initial contact for pay, compensation and benefits questions from the human resources team.
  • Assist with the administration of benefits programs and processes.
  • Daily benefits processing; life events and enrollments, dependent documentation, terminations, changes, accident and death claims, premium arrears, rollovers, loans, distributions and withdrawals. Perform maintenance of benefits database and updating payroll records.
  • On an ongoing basis, process benefits funding, allocation, billing and reconciliations.
  • Audit benefit enrollment and eligibility; communicate discrepancies.
  • Contribute to other human resources activities and special projects, as needed.
  • Collaborate, cross-train and serve as back-up on various payroll, compensation and benefit processes.
  • Comply with applicable federal, state and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures.
  • Obtain knowledge and demonstrate the principles of Living Lifespace, person directed care and successful aging philosophies and their inherent core values of commitment, respect, compassion, dedication, team work and quality. Team member will support, actively participate and act in accordance with the principles of the Living Lifespace service culture and be familiar with and fluent in the language and service pillars of Living Lifespace.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate degree or an equivalent of two years of applicable experience is required.
  • Two years of previous human resources experience, preferably supporting compensation, payroll and/or benefits, is preferred.
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP preferred

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Working knowledge and experience with ADP is preferred.
  • Experience processing payroll is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and the ability to navigate through multiple systems.
  • Must be self-motivated and work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Capability of effective planning and priority setting. Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously while working under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Detail oriented, with problem solving skills to ensure accuracy.
  • Knowledge of all pertinent federal and state regulations, filing and compliance requirements, both adopted and pending, affecting employee benefits programs, including ERISA, COBRA, FMLA, ADA, Section 125, workers' compensation, Medicare and Social Security and DOL requirements.
  • Ability to administer confidential information in an appropriate manner.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with residents, vendors and team members.

 ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:  The physical activities of this position constantly require effective talking, hearing, sitting, walking and standing functions.  The position also often involves sedentary work where sitting is required most of the time, with occasional standing or walking. The position also is often requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Must be able to perform activities with close visual acuity, such as reading a computer screen and reading print material.  The functions of this position are conducted in a temperature controlled environment.

 INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:   The occupant of this position must be able to perform the responsibilities of the position well under pressure.  The position requires adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure.  This position requires the ability to deal with and find resolution to problems and maintain a productive working relationship with team members, and may be interrupted frequently to meet the needs and requests of others. It also requires adaptability to fluctuate between priorities on a daily basis while being responsive to needs as they arise.
