Job Summary

The primary function of the Shop Manager position is to lead the day-to-day management of the shops. Provide highly reliable service including shop staff, preventative and predictive maintenance, emergency maintenance, support for and compliance with applicable maintenance and record keeping requirements following Total Process Reliability (TPR) standards.  Supervises and provides oversight the shop staff through effective planning, communication, staffing, implementation and operations according to our mission statement and Duininck Standards of Conduct. Be the direct point of contact to the Planners/Schedulers for updating the status of planned, preventative and corrective work. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision and oversight to direct reports to ensure their work meets departmental objectives and standards.
  • Ensure rapid turnaround of vehicles and equipment.
  • Conduct periodic QC checks to ensure quality assurance/ quality control procedures are in place and functioning properly.
  • Conduct performance reviews of direct reports.
  • Monitor department OPEX expenditures, repairs and maintenance.
  • Develop and monitor process standardization in maintenance activities to ensure corporate mandates and policies related to equipment are being executed.
  • Ensure quality control of all vendors and suppliers to ensure established procedures and standards are followed.
  • In conjunction with others, will be directly involved in hiring and firing maintenance personnel.
  • Coordinate shipment and receipt of emergency materials and other resources.
  • Support implementation and usage of the CMMS programs and future upgrades.
  • Coordinate resources, including mobilization activities of equipment to and from shop for emergency repairs, if needed.
  • Work with Planner/Schedulers to inspect incoming equipment and plan repair jobs.
  • Work with the Planner/Schedulers to prioritize responsibilities and to determine what work goes out and to which Technician(s).
  • Ensure that all employees and shop visitors comply with Duininck safety standards and requirements to include PPE, procedures, etc.
  • Coordinate greasing and oiling of vehicles with Operator Care program.
  • Supervise PM program.
  • Participate in meetings for communications, instructions and problem solving.
  • Coordinate movement and storage of vehicles and equipment in yard.
  • Supervise the yard utility man.
  • Conduct weekly safety meetings with shop personnel.
  • Coordinate outside emergency repairs with vendors for rolling stock
  • Secure estimates for outside emergency repairs for rolling stock.
  • Develop and review training requirements for Technicians to keep pace with the maintenance requirements of new vehicles/equipment.
  • Ensure work orders are complete and accurate.
  • Support TPR efforts and meetings.
  • Serve as lead troubleshooter for shop repairs.
  • Approve timecards for assigned personnel.
  • Conduct RCFA of major failures.
  • Expedite high-priority projects.
  • Coordinate the general maintenance needs of the facility.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to make quick appropriate decisions based on a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience and judgment.
  • Ability to meet or exceed department Key Performance Indicators.

Education and Experience:

  • Two year degree in maintenance-related field and seven (7) or more years of experience in equipment maintenance or related function, or equivalent combination.
  • Experience and training with TPR (Total Process Reliability) a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Self-starter.
  • Ability to interact effectively with others and resolve conflicts.
  • Above average proficiency in the use of computer software, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic project management skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Shop Technicians and Field Technicians.
  • CMMS Operator.
  • Maintenance Planner/ Scheduler.
  • Yard Personnel. 

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to stand, sit and move about the facility.
  • Regularly required to drive and negotiate various job sites, which can include climbing on/off equipment, ladders, etc.
  • Ability to work with computer equipment and office equipment.
  • Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Travel as required.
  • CDL Driver’s license required.
