Position Summary: 

The Safety Director of Wendling Quarries, Inc. is first and foremost a Values-Based Leader who lives, works and leads in alignment with their personal core values, purpose, strengths and passion to in-turn inspire those around them to do them same. The Safety Director will design, develop, and implement product and service offerings related to safety management to an end that ensures the companies continued evolution and development into a highly engaged, high-performing values-based organization. Incumbent will formulate, implement, administer, and evaluate safety strategies to manage those risks efficiently and cost-effectively. Incumbent must remain informed of the dynamic changes that occur within the company and make the best risk mitigation method decisions based on the changes. They are responsible for building a world class Safety team that provides the highest level of service and support to the company and functioning in a collaborative and cooperative manner with all other team members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Values-Based Leadership and Self-Development – Maintain a consistent commitment to becoming the best version of self through continuous learning, growth, and development as a Values-Based Leader, Safety Director, and exceptional human being.
  • Team Development – Build a high-performing team through disciplined recruiting, assessment, selection, training and development, and retainage of the best talent. Execute on the annual performance review process and program to ensure the continued learning and growth of team members.
  • Execution – Leads and directs team to execute on all safety strategy and performance. Completion of safety department annual business plans with performance metrics.
  • Reporting and Analytics – Prepare reporting and comprehensive analysis of selected weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual safety/claims information that is relevant and timely. Information to be formatted and presented in a manner that simple and understandable for division and empowerment leaders to aid in their decision making and ability to share the information with their teams. Included in this work is the forecasting, budgeting, and actual to goal performance data from the enterprise level to divisions and empowerment teams.

Essential Duties:

Safety Strategy and Performance: Must be able to enhance and support productivity of employees by administering an effective safety program to include development, implementation and management strategies that maintain profits and productivity. To develop, implement and maintain regulatory safety compliance policies, programs and training. To collect, evaluate, and maintain data concerning injury claims, worker's compensation, and other risk-related data. To investigate and analyze root causes, patterns, or trends that could result in compensatory events. To help identify and implement corrective action where appropriate. To lead administration of the company drug-testing program. To promote safety awareness through the implementation of motivational and incentive programs.  To determine corrective or preventative measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented. To ensure equipment is properly maintained and inspected regularly.  Initiate, perform and document jobsite inspections and audits with special emphasis on hazard recognition, unsafe behaviors and correction.  Initiate, coordinate and conduct safety meetings and training programs to ensure the effective communication of company policy and safety standards.  Responsible for emergency preparedness at our facilities, and for deploying response teams to disasters and emergencies, both internal and external.  Coordinate and participate in regulatory agency inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations. As a mining organization WQI is regulated by MSHA, OSHA and various state and federal environmental agencies. Coordinate and control the development and review of job hazard analysis for each major phase of our work to ensure its safe completion. This includes assessing the need for and facilitating the training for JHA’s as may be required.

Experience, Education and Skill Requirements:

Education Level

4-year Degree or equivalent

Education Major

Bachelor’s Degree in Safety or related field strongly desired.

Work Experience

Minimum 3-5 years in a mining related safety environment.  Leadership experience preferred.

Required Licenses and Certifications

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP) certification is preferred.

Knowledge

Knowledge of mining industry and OSHA/MSHA/DOT/MUTCD and state/federal agencies required.
