Job Summary

Overland Sand & Gravel is looking for a high performing, results-oriented Plant / Loader operator to join our team. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, hard worker, and reliable. Operates straight or articulated rubber-tired tractor type vehicle equipped with front mounted hydraulically powered bucket or scoop to lift and transport bulk materials to and from storage or processing areas, to load trucks, also operates mechanical dredge.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Abide by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely.

Starts engine, shifts gears, presses pedals, and turns steering wheel to operate loader.

Moves levers to lower and tilt bucket and drives front end loader forward to force bucket into bulk material.

Moves levers to raise and tilt bucket when filled, drives vehicle to work site, and moves levers to dump material.

Safely loads materials onto trucks.

Performs routine maintenance on loader such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning.

Perform required inspections (tires, oil, water system, hydraulic system, windows, lights, brakes, oil, etc.) to ensure that equipment is in safe working conditions.  Report immediately any equipment damages or hazards to equipment.

Operate a motorboat in a safe manner to be able to get to and from the dredge. Inspect dredge before operation begins and during dredging. Must fill out daily inspection sheets.

Start plant engine and motors.  Adjust motor speeds as needed.

Performs material sampling and gradations to ensure specifications are met. 

Maintain moving parts on plant.  Change screens, grease bearings, monitor and adjust pump packing. 

Attend required safety and production meetings with supervisor for planning and organizing current and future delivery schedules, and worksite safety policies and procedures.

Attend company sponsored training events, including required licensing and/or education requirements targeted for continuing personal growth and development.

Report to Safety Director any failure to adhere to MSHA, OSHA, LB757, EEO and/or Overland Sand & Gravel professional standards.

Other duties may be assigned.

Education and/or Experience: 

  • High school education preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Must have previous commercial driving and heavy equipment operations experience with some manual labor on plant equipment. 
  • Must have the knowledge and the ability to operate a motorboat in a safe manner to be able to get to and from the dredge. 
  • Must have proven mechanical troubleshooting skills. 
  • Must have previous heavy equipment moving experience. 
  • Must also be mechanically and physically inclined to provide support mechanical skills to the gravel pit operation.
  • Previous commercial truck driving experience is needed. 
  • Must meet insurability for driving requirements of the company. 
  • Must meet the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical requirements and carry a physical exam card, which is to be kept current according to DOT guidelines. 
  • Must be able to work according to seasonal and construction demand schedule. 
  • Must have previous heavy equipment experience concentrating on loaders, backhoe, track backhoe, and any other specialty equipment. 
  • Must be able to work variable work schedules and 12 hour shifts during busy season. 
  • Must be able to operate with minimal supervision, be a trouble shooter and take initiative to anticipate, investigate and resolve problems. 
  • Must be a self-starter. 
  • Must be able to work well with others.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.

The employee is frequently required to climb or balance; walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.

The employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 

The employee may be required to work a 12-hour shift, and during busy season the position may be required to work 5 to 6 days a week.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside hot and cold weather conditions.

Construction site may have differential grade in walking situations.

The employee is regularly exposed to construction driving conditions, moving mechanical parts, and vibration.

The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid weather conditions, moving mechanical parts and high, precarious places.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. 

This is a non-smoking campus.
