Job purpose

The QC Manager supports asphalt production efforts, evaluates project specifications, reviews statistics and trends. Tracks and maintains data in a database. QC Manager performs statistical calculations to maximize product quality and performance. This position works in an office and/or laboratory setting as well as in the field at plant operations and customer job sites. The employee will work with Plant Operators to direct day to day activities of lab technicians and set appropriate goals

Duties and responsibilities

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions based on the best information available, and communicate that information to those that need to know.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Manage the process of designing, organizing, and implementing a quality control plan.
  • Perform Quality Control Testing of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and associated materials as assigned.
  • Comply with all safety policies, procedures and established safe practices.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and manage and coach of group of 4-5 employees
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of all governing specifications for volumetrics and densities for primarily DOT’s in Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota
  • Perform physical tests of the volumetrics at the plant and in the field as required
  • Keep a written daily log of activities and observations and report in writing to management as required. Note the misuse of products by hauler or customer and take measures to correct same
  • Perform sampling, processing, and testing materials used in the production of Hot Mix Asphalt in accordance with AASHTO, ASTM, DOT, and FAA.
  • Communicate with Plant Operators, Field Superintendents, State Hwy. officials and Customer Engineering Representatives, as necessary, in a professional manner.
  • Prepare and maintain Daily Progress Reports, QC Charts, and testing records.
  • Evaluate test results and communicate with Lab Technicians to assist with maintaining compliance with specifications, including mixture blend changes.
  • Perform maintenance and calibration of lab testing equipment and document findings.
  • Gather samples and materials to send off to 3rd parties for mix design
  • Obtain samples for tests at various stages in production process, and test products for a variety of qualities.
  • Observe and record activities of outside testing agencies and contractors as they relate and affect both the quality of mix at the asphalt plant and the compaction of the laid down mat.
  • Ensure all employees under your purview keep current with certifications in the various states the company conducts business
  • Identify problems, gather, and analyze information and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Oversee the maintenance and certification of lab equipment
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and meet other housekeeping needs as required

Qualifications

  • Trade school or 4-year degree preferred or a minimum of five years’ directly related experience in the paving industry; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
  • Must be certified(Agg Field Lab and Asphalt Mix Tester) in all states the company conducts business or willing and able to obtain certification in all those states within 1 year
  • Proficient computer skills and familiarity with Windows Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering specifications and drawings
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, supervisors, and customers.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as statistics, PWLs and geometry to determine trends
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fraction, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Complies with all federal, state, and local guidelines.
  • Must possess a valid Driver License
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment urine drug test and comply with drug and alcohol policies during employment

Working conditions

  • Indoor/Outdoor environment subject to changing conditions and temperatures
  • Occasional exposures to fumes, dust, odors, heights, and loud noises.
  • May be required to work 60+ hours, 6 or more days a week.

  • Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner.
  • Clarity of vision at varying distances to perform various work assignments.
  • Standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a variety of specialized tools and equipment.
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally.
  • Occasional bending, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling object(s) weighing up to 50 pounds
