Minimum Qualifications

  • Architects and Planners: BArch or MArch degree, or degree in related field and demonstrating prior experience with laboratory planning
  • Scientists and Lab Managers: BA or BS in biology, chemistry or related technical field and lab bench and/or lab management/operations experience
  • 3-5+ years experience in architecture or laboratory/science
  • Architects: General knowledge of lab projects and building construction related to lab projects
  • Scientists: General knowledge regarding lab safety, lab workflows, lab components (equipment, sinks, storage, benches/furniture, etc.), lab utilities (purified water, gases, exhaust, etc.), and lab support spaces (glasswashing, media services, waste rooms, stockrooms, etc.).
  • Experience leading design programming and planning meetings with client, or exposure to meetings with a willingness to want to lead these discussions
  • Architects: Proficiency in Revit software
  • Proficiency in MS Office software
  • Excellent communication skills – including speaking, writing and graphic communication - are a must. This includes being able to speak confidently and concisely, leading conversations in the programming and planning phases of a project, and developing materials to support those conversations.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn

Preferred Qualifications

  • Architects: Professional architectural registration or on the path and almost there! Familiarity with lab-specific code, furniture, equipment, finishes, and NIH design guidelines/best practices.
  • Scientists: Familiarity with reading floor plans and managing Excel lists. Willingness to learn drafting software and graphics/design standards.
  • Experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industries.
  • Flexibility to travel (occasionally to moderate, depending on project location)
  • Experience with Adobe Creative suite (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
  • Experience with database software

Responsibilities

  • Working with a team approach and mentality in a collaborative environment that is both client-facing and internal.
  • Meeting with clients to assess needs and developing an associated project program.
  • Completing tasks associated with programming and concept planning, including the ability to delegate work to a support team.
  • Prepare conceptual design ideas, 2D and 3D presentation materials
  • Developing conceptual designs and coordinating with engineers on the design team.
  • Participate in research, selection and specification of laboratory-related architectural components
  • Oversee development of construction drawings and specifications that incorporate client, regulatory, and industry standards.
  • Mentoring, motivating, and inspiring junior architectural staff and lab planners and assisting in professional development.
  • Attending industry-specific social and educational events for networking and professional development.
  • Traveling as required for client development and project execution.
  • Time split between client site and office, with potential to work from home once trained
