Clinical Trials Assistant III

The Institute for Medical Research, a nonprofit organization that conducts cutting edge research at the Durham VA Health Care System (DVAHCS), is seeking a Clinical Trials Assistant III. This position would contribute to select clinical research studies. The work of the CTA contributes to the local and national research mission of the VA.

Job Description:

  • Recruit, screen, and consent research participants for various clinical trials and research projects conducted by principal investigator; assist with patient interviews
  • Attend phlebotomy training courses in order to perform blood draws/procedures as directed by the study protocol
  • Follow all regulatory procedures for research studies and document any deviations from those procedures
  • Assist with regulatory tracking, patient tracking, and other regulatory paperwork as needed
  • Communicate with the Attending Physician and Clinical Research Nurse regarding problems or events in a timely manner according to protocol
  • Assist in the collection and management of clinical data and collection of source documents
  • Maintain study databases and other study-related spreadsheets
  • Assist in sample processing
  • Laboratory maintenance
  • Maintain inventory and supplies needed for study
  • Communicate diplomatically and professionally with administration, faculty, clinical lab personnel, subjects, and other study team members
  • Work effectively with Veteran population and maintain patient confidentiality
  • Work effectively and efficiently as part of a team
  • Adhere to all safety and compliance regulations and internal standards of procedure

Salary Range: $45,000 - $49,000

Supervisory Controls:

  • The Principal Investigator and Clinical Research Nurse are responsible for the overall supervision of the work and workload of the Clinical Trials Assistant. The incumbent is expected to meet deadlines on routine duties and to use their own initiative in completing work. Work may be reviewed by any member of the principal investigator’s research team.

Scope and Effect:

  • The major purpose of these assignments is to conduct VA relevant research projects as conceived and defined by the principal investigator. The work of the incumbent contributes to the local and national research mission of the VA.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

This position requires an organized, task oriented, deadline-sensitive individual with a Bachelor’s degree. 1 – 3 years of clinical research experience with associated training (e.g., CITI, GCP) preferred. Applicants must deal diplomatically and professionally with administration, faculty, clinical and lab personnel, and subjects. Demonstrated leadership, professional initiative and teamwork abilities are required. This position requires an applicant who is comfortable with processing human specimens such as blood, urine, and feces; in addition, undergoing phlebotomy training. Basic computer skills are required and familiarity with MS Excel and MS Excel are preferred. Prior experience with clinical research, lab work, FDA regulations, HIPAA considerations, and consenting process is preferred.

Applicants must have the ability to: work independently in a fast-paced environment, prioritize and manage the workflow of multiple projects, sit for long periods in front of computers, lift up to 20 pounds, and be fluent in English.
