JOB SUMMARY

The Community Outreach Coordinator’s responsibilities are to build strategic relationships, conduct a variety of outreach activities, as well as recruit and retain volunteers for all Volunteers of America Programs. This position manages all elements of volunteering either within or on behalf of Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana.  The Coordinator will manage volunteers and their relationship with those they come into contact with, including employees and Volunteers of America consumers.  They will also monitor, evaluate and accredit volunteers in partnership with their service location supervisor. We see this position as an entry point to the Volunteers of America fundraising organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLILITIES

  • Volunteer Leadership
    • Develop and execute impactful volunteer program that can be marketed to individuals and organizations (clubs, companies, etc.) as a means to give back to the community while informing them of the mission of the organization.
    • Coordinate all aspects of the volunteer engagement including, but not limited to: volunteer credentialing, background checks, publicity strategies, liability, supervision/coordination, volunteer retention, centralized intake and distribution processes.
    • Arrange for on-the-job and other required training. Supervise and evaluate volunteers either directly or in partnership with service site supervisor.
    • Coordinate and supervise employee volunteers during agency’s two major fundraising events, the GolfStar Classic and Reach for the Stars Breakfast.
  • Outreach
    • Execute agency’s Christmas Wish program by pairing consumers’ wishes for Christmas to community members (individuals, organizations and companies) that would like to fulfill them.
    • Cultivate and develop new relationships with individuals and organizations to increase exposure and understanding of Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana within our community.
    • Provide the “ideal experience” for active community investors by promptly handling inquiries, valuing donor gifts regardless of size, and regularly communicate the community impact those investments are making.
    • Participate in point of entry tours and other activities that educate the broader community about Volunteers of America, its mission and programs.
  • Reporting and support
    • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of Volunteers of America’s Volunteer Services department.
    • Maintain a database of volunteer workers and hours of work; prepare and present reports to management staff; recommend necessary changes or adjustments needed to the volunteer program.
    • Maintain a list of working partnership agencies and contacts.
    • Mange budgets and resources, including the reimbursement of expenses.
    • Participate in fund-raising and other agency activities, as necessary.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES

While this position has no supervisory duties over other full-time or part-time employees, they have supervisory duties over volunteers during projects as well as employees who are volunteering during events.

 

KEY CONTACTS

It is important for this position to develop working relationships with other members of the Resource Development and Marketing Team, given the team’s spirit of collaboration. In addition, this position should develop working relationships with managers of programs in order to effectively identify, scope out and execute volunteer projects. Finally, this position must develop relationships with external organizations (companies, associations, clubs) to offer volunteer opportunities

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Required

  • Bachelors degree in social services, marketing, public relations, or a related field.
  • At least two years experience in working for a non profit as a volunteer coordinator/recruiter, community outreach coordinator or development associate.
  • Proven ability to supervise, motivate, train and monitor performance of volunteers on internally led projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skill, solid presentation skills and strong personal computer skills.

Preferred

  • Ability to utilize research tools to gather necessary information in a timely and effective manner and to utilize information gathered to create suggested guidelines based upon lessons learned/best practices.
  • Proven ability to work with a diverse community.
  • Experience with supporting an organization’s social media/communication efforts preferred.

Must have

  • Current driver’s license issued by state of residence
  • Current Vehicle Inspection decal
  • Current vehicle insurance
  • Current vehicle registration in state of residence
  • Satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report
  • Must be able to pass a criminal history investigation.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is primarily performed both in an office environment while seated at a desk or out in the field leading volunteer projects.  Dexterity is used while performing work with personal computer keyboard, calculator and other office equipment.  Must be able to travel site to site in personal vehicle and occasional weekend and/or evening hours may be assigned as needed.
