Our family-owned 60-year company specializes in mass excavation, rock handling, underground utilities, private and public infrastructure, asphalt paving, aggregate crushing, asphalt hot plant production, and much more. Heavy Equipment Apprenticeships are designed to give the employee all the necessary knowledge to be a well-rounded Heavy Equipment Operator as we build candidates from the ground with challenging assignments as their training and confidence allows. Prospective candidates typically enter the program as laborers with an initial probationary period so that they may evaluate the job duties and work required. This Arizona Department of Labor sanctioned Operating Engineer’s Apprenticeship program COST YOU NOTHING! You are paid a competitive wage during the hands-on training period which is based upon a minimum 3-year, 6000-hour intensive training schedule. For the duration of the 3 years, most of your time will be working on job sites throughout the state of Arizona. Work hours are typically 7AM to 5PM but may vary as required.
On your off-time hours, you will also need to complete approximately 400 hours of home study (textbook & online) and 200 classroom training hours which are not paid. Typical program completion is approximately 3.1 years or 6200 hours from basic Laborer to Heavy Equipment Operating Engineer with NO STUDENT LOAN DEBT AND MONEY IN YOUR POCKET! Starting wage for candidates will depend upon previous experience but may range from $13.95 to $16.50 per hour. Upon graduating from our Apprenticeship Program, an employee's base salary will typically be $48,000.00 to $52,000.00 per year - all within 3 years! This does not include overtime or annual bonuses you might earn so total compensation will be much more. From there, graduates are considered fully qualified equipment operators able to be considered for a Foreman’s Skill Trainer position where they receive other awesome perks. General Job Description:
This is an entry-level position
General duties will range from laboring with shovels, using jumping jacks and concrete saws to operating backhoes, rollers, loaders, excavators, dozers and motor graders. Candidates must be able to work in a dusty environment on and around all heavy equipment, with frequent exposure to the elements (working outside).
Physical requirements of the apprenticeship include walking long distances, being on your feet for hours at a time, bending, kneeling, stooping, climbing ladders and walking on rocky or uneven ground surfaces such as slopes, mud and/or ice and snow. Must be agile and able to work in or outdoors, in any conditions and in all types of weather. Driver’s license and good driving record is preferred as statewide travel is often required (subsistence pay may be available. This is a SAFETY SENSITIVE position. All positions at Fann Contracting are considered safety sensitive which generally means that these positions involve some aspect of a heightened danger requiring an employee's full and unimpaired skills and judgment to safely execute his or her job.
Other General Apprenticeship requirements:
- Pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Frequent moderate to heavy lifting.
- Apprentices must timely complete all 22 apprenticeship OJT training Categories (6000 hours), online and in person training classes.
- Ability to work a demanding and flexible schedule (sometimes 6 days per week).
- High School Diploma or GED preferred as basic math, writing and computer skills are necessary/critical to your success.
- Driver s license is required as statewide travel is sometimes necessary.
- Good Driving Record with no DUI within the last 3 years.
- Must be committed to self-improvement and exceeding daily expectations.
- Ability to manage changing instructions, priorities and workflow.
- Ability to work independently or as a member of a team.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all organizational levels.
- Must have a great attitude and an excellent work ethic.
Physical requirements include but are not limited to good hearing, being on your feet for hours at a time, bending, kneeling, stooping, climbing on equipment and/or ladders and walking on rocky or uneven ground surfaces such as slopes, mud and/or ice and snow. Must work safely but be agile and able to work in or outdoors, in any conditions and in all types of weather. Specific vision abilities required by this job often include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
