SMSI is looking for a Project Engineer to support work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN. This is a full-time, contract assignment supporting a hybrid arrangement schedule, dependent on work need. Vaccinations applicable for work on site. 

Overview:

The United States is a partner nation in ITER, an unprecedented international collaboration of scientists and engineers working to design, construct, and assemble a burning plasma experiment that can demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy. A self-heated burning plasma is a crucial step in fusion energy development. US ITER is a DOE Office of Science project hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee. Partner labs are Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). ITER's other partners are the People's Republic of China, the European Union, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the Russian Federation. US ITER is seeking a project engineer with an interest in supporting the design and procurement of Heating Systems hardware scope being delivered by US ITER. This will include a broad spectrum of hardware ranging from state-of-the-art custom-designed components to commercially available equipment. In this role you will have the opportunity to lead or facilitate the scoping, planning, defining, justifying, reviewing, and reporting of the preliminary and final design. You will have the opportunity to prepare for procurement and manufacturing of hardware. You will have the opportunity to support the management of manufacturing contracts of various sizes. You will interface with designers, engineers and subject matter experts within the US ITER project and personnel at the ITER headquarters in France. You will support the Control Account Manager by contributing and facilitating work with team members within guidelines established by US ITER Engineering Systems.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with Control Account Manager, Technical Project Officers, Quality Assurance Officers, Procurement Officers, Team Leads, Design & Analysis Engineers and Subject Matter Experts within US ITER Engineering Systems to develop project engineering deliverables detailing and verifying the requirements for high power RF and microwave heating systems.
  • Facilitate development of procurement documentation including: statements of work, technical specification, procurement descriptions, and component classifications.
  • Prepare preliminary shipping, installation, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning plans.
  • Participate in technical review of final design documents and drawings including Process Flow Diagrams, Process & Instrumentation Diagrams, Technical Specifications, analysis and calculations.
  • Support the Control Account Manager and design engineers to prepare and participate in the Preliminary and Final Design Reviews with ITER International Organization and subsequent closeout of punch list actions.
  • Manage configuration control activities of deliverables during design and fabrication phases.
  • Assist the Technical Project Officer to manage fabrication supplier documentation for ITER components.
  • Support evaluation of fabrication deviation requests and non-conformances from industrial suppliers.
  • Foreign and domestic travel to fabricators, support subcontractors, and sponsor (IO) facilities may be required. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering or a related discipline

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Engineering or Graduate Degree related to Project
  • Project Management Professional Certification
  • Experience in supporting complex technical projects with design and manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and design processes as well as project management.
  • Experience in preservation, installation, and maintenance of engineered equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize project management principals and tools to support execution of project.
  • Demonstrated ability to pro-actively collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to evaluate problems, investigate, and propose solutions and document the design.
