Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) is currently searching for a Vice President & Chief Financial Officer to provide expert financial advice and consultation to the CEO and Board of Directors. This position assists in formulating strategic direction, guides financial decisions, develops, executes and monitors the integrity, accuracy and effectiveness of accounting systems, oversees and manages all reporting and leads the accounting and finance team.
This position can be located in either our Des Moines or Cedar Rapids, Iowa office.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Engage as an active member of the Leadership Team working collaboratively with Vice Presidents to advance the overall goals of the cooperative.
- Lead & manage Accounting & Finance team:
- Team Leadership: identify approaches to effectively engage and motivate team members; identify specific desired results/outcomes for the year and work with team to achieve outcomes; communicate goals and direction with clear expectations for achievement; identify talent and future potential working with individuals to establish plans for ongoing development at CIPCO; tap into team and individual talents by affording opportunities as warranted.
- Team Management: assign work, monitor assignments & assess performance, providing feedback to team members; interview and select new hires; determine & implement employee training; address employee complaints; coach & counsel team members for performance; make employee salary and job change determinations; and participate in disciplinary actions or other appropriate actions per policies and procedures in conjunction with Human Resources.
- Drive a culture of openness, honesty, and collaboration throughout the cooperative by facilitating effective communication.
- Advise the CEO on financial goals and direction as they relate to the overall financial performance of the cooperative.
- Lead the cooperative’s financial risk management efforts including, but not limited to, commodities hedging and counterparty credit.
- Direct and monitor the cooperative’s financial forecasting, budgeting, cost of service, and wholesale rate design processes.
- Direct and monitor cooperative borrowing activities.
- Direct investment decisions and cash management and implement investment policies within Investment Committee guidelines.
- Act as primary coordinator with the cooperative’s board of directors and member representatives regarding financial matters.
- Provide overall financial assistance to CIPCO subsidiaries and revolving loan fund.
- Manage and maintain relationships with CIPCO’s lending institutions such as RUS, CoBank, & CFC, including negotiation of key terms such as interest rate, financial covenants, and payment terms.
- Serve as CIPCO representative in coordination and dealings with credit rating agencies.
- Manage federal grant funds, infrastructure investment incentive programs and compliance.
- Prepare and maintain tax accrual and address tax issues for CIPCO and subsidiaries.
- Participate in contract negotiations and review various legal documents, power purchase agreements and other contracts regarding financial terms, covenants, and other conditions.
- Foster and maintain key business relationships with regional utilities and partnerships.
- Administer operational matters and compliance for CIPCO’s First Mortgage Indenture.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting and 10 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certified Public Accountant required. Master’s Degree preferred. Experience in electric utilities preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of team management and knowledge of accounting practices and office procedures required.
- Experience working with returns and different types of taxes.
- Detail oriented with a high degree of accuracy
- Is open and reacts positively and productively to change; willingly takes on new challenges; acts as change agent for cooperative
- Strong leadership, management, and interpersonal skills
- Able to clearly communicate financial information into sound business language for all to comprehend and understand

- Able to effectively coach team members guiding individual performance to acceptable levels

- Ability to deliver quality work on tight deadlines, with strong organization and priority setting skills.
