The Iowa DOT is looking for road heroes and snow fighters to join our team! As our newest Highway Technician, you’ll spend your days outside doing whatever it takes to make Iowa highways safer while fulfilling our Mission - Making Lives Better Through Transportation. One day you’ll be inspecting construction projects, the next you might be grading or assisting with maintenance activities. Each day is a new adventure.
While a CDL permit is required upon hire, you must have your Class A and endorsements / restrictions CDL within 5 months following your appointment. CDL Training for Iowa DOT employees is provided!! Entry Level Driver Training is available if you do not already possess a Class A and endorsements / restrictions CDL for positions that require it. Those eligible will receive both hands-on Behind-the-Wheel Range and Road training, with web-based Theory training, to fulfill required state and federal regulations.
Location: Decorah Maintenance Garage - Within five (5) months, employees are required to reside within 45 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from assigned work location.
Shift: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, hours may vary and subject to call 24 hours a day during emergency and / or weather conditions; occasional overnight travel
Pay Range: $24.50 to $29.38 an hour
Rain or shine, you’ll keep the roads safe by:
Supporting IDOT in day-to-day activities including, but not limited to:
- conducting routine sampling, inspection, and testing of materials used in highway construction
- maintaining construction records
- informing contractors and project inspectors of construction quality issues and/or non-complying work
- mowing / cutting brush
- repairing roadside waterways
- paving projects
- participating in traffic control
- performing routine maintenance and service of DOT equipment and vehicles
- using DOT technical devices and software applications
- disposing of litter and debris
- operating snow equipment
Obtaining required certifications as needed - training is provided by the Iowa DOT
