Position Overview:

The Senior Human Resources Generalist is a key member of our HR team, responsible for managing a wide range of human resources functions in a unionized setting. This role involves partnering with union leadership and management to drive HR initiatives, ensuring compliance with collective bargaining agreements, and delivering exceptional employee support. The Senior HR Generalist plays a critical role in developing and implementing policies and programs that enhance workforce engagement, performance, and development while maintaining strong labor relations and ensuring a fair and compliant work environment.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Union Relations and Compliance: Serve as the primary liaison between management and union representatives, ensuring adherence to collective bargaining agreements and labor laws.
  • HR Policy and Procedure: Develop, implement, and review HR policies and procedures specific to a union environment to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as union contract terms.
  • Employee Relations: Act as a trusted advisor to both unionized employees and management on HR-related issues, mediating conflicts and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Recruitment and Onboarding: Lead the recruitment process for key union positions, managing job postings, candidate screening, interviewing, and onboarding in alignment with union protocols and company objectives.
  • Performance Management: Support the performance review process by providing coaching to managers, developing performance improvement plans, and facilitating employee development initiatives that respect union guidelines.
  • Training and Development: Coordinate and deliver training programs designed to enhance employee skills, promote career development, and reinforce company values within a union framework.
  • HR Metrics and Reporting: Maintain accurate HR records and prepare reports to monitor key HR metrics, providing insights to union leadership and senior management.
  • Benefits Administration: Oversee employee benefits programs, address inquiries, and work with vendors to ensure competitive and compliant offerings that meet both company and union standards.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with union leadership, senior management, department heads, and external HR partners to implement HR initiatives that support overall business objectives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of HR experience, preferably in a unionized environment, with a strong background in employee relations, recruitment, and HR policy administration.
  • In-depth knowledge of employment laws, collective bargaining agreements, and best practices in human resources management within union settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships at all levels of the organization and with union representatives.
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, with a detail-oriented approach and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Experience:

  • Professional HR certification (e.g., PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP) is highly desirable.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing, construction, or industrial environment with unionized workforces.
  • Proficiency in HR information systems (HRIS) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing union grievances, contract negotiations, or labor relations initiatives.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based with occasional travel to various Total-Western project sites as needed.

Reporting Structure:

The Senior Human Resources Generalist reports directly to the HR Manager and collaborates closely with senior leadership, union representatives, department heads, and external HR partners to ensure the effective execution of HR strategies and labor relations programs.


Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $75,000 - $95,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
