Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Topman to join our heavy dirt and underground construction team. This is a working leadership role responsible for coordinating daily field operations and ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and according to project plans and specifications. The Topman works closely with the Foreman, equipment operators, and labor crews to maintain productivity and quality on the jobsite.

Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the lead worker on site under the direction of the Foreman or Superintendent
- Coordinate daily activities for crews performing underground utility and heavy civil work
- Read and assist with layout using blueprints, grade stakes, and project plans
- Ensure proper installation of underground utilities (water, sewer, storm, etc.)
- Monitor productivity and provide guidance and training to crew members
- Enforce safety policies and ensure compliance with OSHA and company standards
- Communicate effectively with management, inspectors, and other trades
- Assist with scheduling, material needs, and equipment coordination
- Perform hands-on field work as needed, including:
- Trenching, pipe installation, backfilling, and grading
- Cutting pipe using a quickie saw
- Manually maneuvering pipe
- Shoveling rock, dirt, and sand
- Figuring grades and elevations
- Climbing in and out of excavations
- Carrying materials such as concrete bags, lumber, pipe, grates, and castings
- Assisting the pipelayer
- Maintain proper care, storage, and cleanup of tools and equipment
- Follow all jobsite safety procedures
Qualifications
- Minimum 1+ years of experience in heavy dirt or underground construction
- Strong knowledge of underground utility installation and civil construction practices
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
- Good communication and leadership skills
- Strong understanding of jobsite safety requirements
- Dependable with a strong work ethic and attendance record
- Willing and able to work extended hours during peak construction season
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physical labor
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods
- Comfortable working in trenches and around heavy equipment
Preferred Skills
- Experience with utility installation
- Knowledge of construction terminology and pipe materials
- Valid driver’s license
