The grading crew laborer plays a critical role in the grading and earthwork process. They are responsible for shoveling, raking, using hand tools and any other manual labor associated with the installation process. They assist the crew with preparing the grade, potholing, checking the grade for accuracy, and helping layout the work area. They accomplish this by having a strong attention to detail and physical stamina while working in a high-paced team environment producing high quality road surfaces.

Responsibilities: Below are the essential duties and responsibilities of the position; other duties may be assigned as directed:

  • Support with general construction duties for asphalt and grading work
  • Work with hand tools for proper procedures in road building, grading, repairs, and finishing of the surface processes 
  • Loading and unloading of supplies
  • Have the ability and strength required to perform all manual labor tasks
  • Communicate and collaborate closely with the entire paving team
  • Take direction from the foreman and superintendent as the job progresses
  • Have a safety-focused mentality:
    • Always ensure and promote a safe working environment
    • Enforce all company, OSHA and other applicable safety standards
    • Report on any safety concerns to supervisor

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, a candidate would have the following:

  • Strong work ethic and physical stamina
  • Have a strong attention to detail
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multiple tasks effectively and ensure accuracy
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work in a team environment
  • Ability to work overtime, nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including exposure to construction sites and potential physical demands
  • Ability to Lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Class A is a plus
